I hate it when new stuff breaks..

Sucks...I was plunking around on my Epi 339 Thursday night when
all of a sudden the bridge pickup stopped working. Don't know if
the selector switch, a solder joint, or the pickup is the
culprit. :(
Called Sweetwater though and my rep said the factory first year
warranty is still in place so I'm off to a authorized repair
center to drop it off....
I figure I'll have them go ahead and do a restring and setup
while they're at it...But Lord knows how long I'll be without
the Epi :'(
I need more guitars around here!
oh yeah...Forgot I still have the acoustic and the Strat..They
need some love as well.... ;)

Tried every combination in the book. Just dropped it off at
Great Southern Music for the warranty repairs. Told them to
restring it and set it up while they were at it. Cool shop
too...nice selection of guitars and amps. really nice folks
too...Think I'm going to let them do some work on my
Stratocaster when I go to pick up my Epi.

Odd. My Les Paul and S-800 are all original, yet when I bought
my Casino, it immediately needed a new jack.

The Epi is the first guitar I ever owned that needed to go back
for repairs while in warranty....In fact...The first to have a
failure in the first ten years of use. I had to replace the jack
on my LP three times in it's life with me...but that was just
due to a lot of use...

My Yamaha F01 digital piano (my living room piano) needs
servicing. In the octave above middle C there is an
intermittent knocking sound. I was told on the Keyboard Corner
forum that some sort of felt pieces may be occasionally
slipping. I called the Yamaha showroom store where I bought it
the other day. It has a 5 year warranty. I'll call the tech
maybe Tuesday after I get something else off of my plate.

Generally, players have a beef about Epi electronics and
innards. My Korean models are bone stock, but any Chinese model
generally has some problem.

That would be mine....Made In China....
Still...it plays really well, and has good tone(When both the
Pups work)..Decent resonance. Certainly not a Gibson however.
One must work with that which is within his grasp.

Just a general rumination....
I can remember when "Made In Japan" automatically meant an
inferior product. I think about that concept as regards today
and it's quite an eye opener.
During the 70's, the quality and reliability of American made
automobiles took a nose dive, The Japanese and German cars took
over as the leaders in that industry for a variety of reasons.
Better quality control, much better gas mileage, much more
reliable, and cheaper. Not to have worked on, and the parts cost
more, but they didn't have the problems American cars did.
American manufacturers were slow to catch on...Gas wasn't cheap
anymore, and the engines American cars had were basically choked
down re-works of the gas guzzling models of the 50's and 60's.
The smaller engines they hurried in to production to play catch
up with the Asian and Europeans,(Who had been suffering from
high fuel prices since WWII) were dogs that neither got good gas
mileage or did so at the expense of performance.
Then the Japanese proceeded to re-invent the motorcycle and took
America along for the ride. Honda,Suzuki,kawasaki,Yamaha...The
Old Kings..Harley-Davidson, Truimph,BSA all found themselves
struggling to just stay afloat....
Soon...Japan got into the guitar game...At first with real dog
guitars like my first..The "Shinko". genuine pieces of shit.
But in the mid 70's, Electra started producing guitars, all
knock offs of familiar American guitars. I bought a used Electra
Les Paul...It was a very good guitar, fire engine red...Just
like Dicky Betts's! Had good tone, good balance...traded it in
on a Gibson real deal LP Custom a couple of years later. Don't
know what happened to Electra...Or my point........
Oh yeah...SONY...My Granddad was the first person I knew who
bought SONY gear. First, a SONY RTR recorder. Then, a SONY
Simulsync recorder(which I still have), so he could sync
recordings to his Home Movies. Then a SONY portable TV that
could run on DC as well as AC voltage.
Once Yamaha got into the music game...All hell broke
loose...While their guitars found limited success at first,
their home audio products soared in quality, affordability. Once
they released the DX-7...They revolutionized not only keyboards
for the Home but also for professional musicians.
Now, "Made in Japan" is a status symbol..Whether it's a guitar,
a keyboard, a amp, a home stereo....A luxury automobile. A TV...
The Koreans are having their turn now...Their Hyundais and Kias
have devotees, and their copies of prized guitars are garnering
as much respect...as Japanese ones.
How far can the Chinese and Malaysians be behind? Gibson is
collapsing under it's own weight...Epiphones are outselling
them...(Gibson owns Epiphone). Fender Squires out sell American
made ones, and the Malaysian Affintys are catching up in quality
and a lot cheaper.
Toyota has dominated the market for a couple of decades now....
Will "Made in America" end up just being a distant memory?

To be fair, I owned a lot of Squiers, and none of them could
touch MIM Fenders. I even had a Mexican Squier, and it wasn’t
anything special.
Epiphone, on the other hand, beats any Gibson I owned or picked
up in a shop. The expection would be my uncle’s Firebird and
jumbo acoustic. But my Les Paul Custom, made in Korea, sounded
better acoustically than his 80’s Gibson Standard. Felt more
solid too.
Rickenbacker has yet to outsource, but they’re soooo niche.
