Guitar amp tubes
By: indigo_dave Date: October 15, 2017, 8:19 am

I have small Laney guitiar amp. I use it for my electric uke,
which is really more of a mini-guitar (4 strings tuned from the
bottom up - D G B E ). I bought a ZVEX pedal for it. It
"drives" the tubes to get its distortion effect.
1st question is does it burn the tubes out faster ?
2nd question is where do I go to buy replacement tubes ? There
is a grill on the back with Phillips head screws. Simple enough
for me, a technical illiterate, to remove. It appears there
are 3 tubes of varying sizes. I avoid taking care of these
things. In other words I procrastinate. But now I want to take
fix this issue.
Any tips ?

I looked on Amazon and the tubes seem to be:
2 x ECC83 Pre Amp Tube
2 x 6V6GT Output Tube
So where would one purchase these in an actual physical store.
Radio Shack is history of course. I suppose there's always
Amazon.

pedal will not hurt your tubes
you don't really have to replace your tubes unless there is
something wrong with them
my 1958 Dynacord amp still has its orignal tubes
my Mark I, I had to replace the tubes a couple of years ago,
stock tubes must have had thousands of hours of service
even left the amp on for a week a couple of times, but after 30
years, the amp started to scream and replaced the tubes
anyway, you can get Laney retubing kits at TheTubeStore, the 6V6
has to be a matched pair

JJ Tubes are fine, made in Slovakia
EHX/TungSol/Svetlana/Mullard are made in Russia
most of the other brands are made in China

Thanks for weighing in Bieke and Bucky and AJ. I think I will
try leaving the amp turned on for a few hours. It started
making some crackling and hissing noises when last used. It's
actually been several months since I used it. Piano is my
thang.

One thing that wouldn't hurt would be to remove the tubes(when
COLD) and spray the posts on the tubes, and the sockets they go
in with Electrical contact Cleaner. If you can get to the volume
and tone pots, spray them and rotate several times. Also spray
where the input jack is.

Thanks a bunch AJ. That sort of thing is unknown to me. I'll
look into that. I'll be there's something on YouTube. Sometimes
I forget to search over there. Other times I remember.

ok, crackle and hiss can be a sign one of your preamp tubes has
gone bad
but as you haven't used the amp in a while, it could just be
some condensation
so yeah, switch the amp on for a couple of hours, see if the
cracke and hiss becomes worse or goes away
if the crackle and hiss is still there
first check the preamp tubes with the pencil tapping method as
explained in the link
