Re: What recording interfaces are you using ?

I ordered the Dell desktop the Nat on HC recommended. Ordered
it yesterday. Once I receive the Dell and get it operating
(restoring from a backup) I will look at ordering an interface
recorder and a new mic.
If this all works as I hope, I'll look at selling my Tascam
DP32SD. I'm hoping to use the 18i8 to record my next CD. The
next CD is intended to be sellable at gigs. My plan is 6 pieces
by Bach (public domain) and maybe 6 original pieces. Lots of
piano stuff obviously. I'm also thinking of trying to do one of
the recordings along the lines of a "Bitches Brew" Miles Davis
thing. This would use several percussion tracks.
Time will tell.
I played a "concert" Tuesday night at an assisted living
facility. It was interesting and different for me. The room was
a dedicated performance room with a stage. Their Tues night
thing is a weekly event. I had about 100 residents sitting and
listening. I gave them a mixed bag of songs and had good
feedback. I ended with "America the Beautiful" and everyone
stood up like for the national anthem. I had one old guy ask
for my autograph - I think that's the first time for that.
I started playing Christmas songs yesterday in preparation for
the holidays. I only have the 1 gig on Christmas day at this
point , but had the idea that if I can get maybe 1 1/2 hours of
Christmas songs into my fingers and brain, maybe I could
advertise in a local community (free) paper for Christmas
parties.
Time will tell.

First, Congrats on the gig and the good feedback! Playing for
100 people is pretty intimidating I'd imagine, but when you have
your material down as solidly as you always do I guess the key
is just "Please yourself". Pretty cool getting asked for your
autograph too!
Dell's are solid machines insofar as I understand, Nat is a
knowledgeable and trustworthy sort on these matters to my
knowledge of him. His original music is good stuff too, if
you've never checked him out on SoundCloud, you ought to.
Boning up on Christmas tunes is a great idea Dave. 'Tis the
season.
I still think utilizing the Tascam as a control surface might be
a plus for further recordings, but that's just me. I'm an old
school faders and knobs sort, and would prefer that option.
However, most of the time your stuff just inhabits a couple of
tracks, so I can see where you'd rather free up some cash, and
some space in the music space in your house.
it's all good news Indigo!

So AJ, you're saying that I could use the Tascam to run the mix
of things recorded with the Scarlett ? Using one of those
confusing connections on the back not doubt. I'm connection
illiterate.
But if that's what you're saying it sounds interesting.

Dave, being connection illiterate is not a Sin, and you need no
forgiveness ;D
I think you absolutely COULD use the Tascam as a control
surface, with the Scarlett.
What you should do is go to the Scarlett forums, and the
recording forums at HC. I don't own a Tascam like yours, but
remember reading up on them quite a lot a year or so ago when I
was considering buying one. Actually, as I've said before, the
Tascam IS a recording interface. Utilizing the USB port, I think
it could interface with Protools just fine. Or working with
it...thing is, you probably would want to use one or the other.
If you go from the Tascam into the Scarlett to record, you are
essentially going through 2 preamps...Not necessarily a good
thing. If you already have ProTools, why not experiment with
using the tascam as the interface first? The Tascam has pretty
highly rated preamps in it. Use the USB out on the Tascam to go
to the computer and proTools...Give it a whirl with
something...You may already have what you need.
As a guitar player, and Bucky will back me up...We tend to be
patch cord/connection freaks anyway...I love it when I've got a
web of wires going everywhere...It's gas...Call me Crazy...But I
do love it so....Hell I have a Tascam patch bay and I built a
couple more...just so I could loom even more wires....

It has a USB out doesn't it? The Scarlett is going to interface
with USB...So.......If you have Pro Tools launched, turn on the
Tascam and plug the USB cord into your computer...The computer
should recognize it, and then you'll have to designate it as
input to Pro Tools. If it works...BAM...you don't need the
Scarlett.
My current desktop is a Lenovo...It's about a year old and has
been rock solid for me. I do everything on it as I'm the only
person in my house that doesn't have a laptop or a smartphone.

From what I was able to read googling the question, I didn't see
that it can be used as a front end for Pro Tools First. Maybe it
can, but I didn't see anything like that. I had this idea.
Could I go back and forth between the Scarlett 18i8 and the
Tascam DP32SD ? My thinking is that doing live-to-tape type
recording might be more natural on the DP32. Recording dropped
in hand percussion or vocal harmony might be easy on the 18i8.
Editing would definitely be easier on PTFirst. So it seems (I'm
just thinking out loud here) that the question would be whether
there are file structure differences. I'll bet the files can
be passed back and forth.
You see any problems with what I'm thinking ?

I think you're right on about the flow Dave...The files could
definitely be passed back and forth, via a memory stick if
nothing else. There might be minor sync issues that should be
easy to resolve however. As far as file differences, the actual
audio files, I would think be originally encoded as wave files.
It would be a matter of Exporting files from the DP32 to PT, or
Importing files to one or the other...You get the drift. Not much
different than when you upload files from your computer to your
dropbox.
There's a learning curve with all this shit. I've had Sonar
almost a year now and I still don't feel I have mastery over it.
I'm just now getting to where I can do a half ass decent job of
editing material. This song of Bucky's I've been working
with....I've learned quite a lot. The thing is, finding a happy
medium with recording volumes. I've done passes where I was
happy with the inflections in my vocals, but then WAP! the
smallest spike in my levels creates the awfullest sound...like a
scratch in a record. Ruins the whole track. Back when I was
recording all analog, I had compressor/limiters that would tame
sudden spikes like that before they had a chance to overload the
tape or the mixer. I haven't yet reached a level of expertise
with the digital plug-in compressors. I've still got a rack
mount compressor but the noise floor on this older equipment is
unacceptable, mostly because of the power supplies involved.
I got a pretty good lead vocal down today on it and I think
I've gotten a method down where I can complete the vocals at
last and pass that on to Bucky for an OK or try again point.
The deeper you go into this rabbit hole of digital tech, the
deeper you realize it is.
