I'm tied up in mixing/final production of one of my own projects
and have deadline beginning October to write/record/mix/produce
a musical piece that is going to be used for some art/science
project involving 25 musicians and artists, I want to give it my
best shot, but haven't done a thing so far. It basically is
making a fitting piece of music to a certain artwork and then
there is a scientific study done to unravel the link between of
graphics and music, or so, I've actually did not even read the
assignment, but I got a huge painting at home that I should be
staring at and then make a piece of music under the influence of
that artwork. Thing is still in the garage for a month already
and I really should unwrap it and have a look ...
I listened to the collab in an earlier stage, I'll give it
       another listen
might be willing to do it
as long as I get full artistic freedom
       >:D
       [/quote]
I have no problem with that...It's still being worked on on my
end...But taking the vocal tracks back to dry is a flick of the
wrist. If you decide to play with it I'll put all the relevant
files in Dropbox. The guitars and drum track is already in
stereo however, the bass and the vocals are separate tracks.

       sheesh
       guitar tones mostly
I like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo a lot
and trying to keep up with a healthy dose of new found music
there is so much to discover, sometimes it's new and fresh,
sometimes it's old, sometimes it's simple, sometimes it's
complex, sometmes I can enjoy a lofi production, but I also
admire laborious productions, sometimes I really sometimes
obscure, sometimes it's popular, sometimes it's fresh and new
bands, sometimes it's bands I totally missed out on and have
been around quite some time or even ceased to be, sometimes it's
       bands I don't like
       for example,
this month I found out and been listening a lot to Fink (band
that has been around for more than 10 years and never heard of
them until couple of weeks ago)
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYbm8-LiUSU
also liked the new Foo Fighters (band I don't like) track with
       McCartney on drums
or the new Morrisey (don't like Morrisey) single "Spent the day
       in bed"
found out about The Lemon Twigs, youngsters, making pop with
       lots of chords
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ4nqnVOfMo
and last week went to see the Regrettes live, also very young,
       teens,
I liked them a lot, it was just a bit strange being the oldest
       person in the audience ...
can't put a finger on it why I like the Regrettes ...

I love Sonic Youth. Especially the late eighties period. I did a
lot of guitar prep stuff on my Aerial Coil album.
I had a black MIM Strat that I got noiseless pickups for. Well,
one of them was a lemon, so I had to wait for Fender to replace
it. Never happened. So, I got a Lace Sensor gold to replace the
middle pickup, and it resulted in a very out of phase sound.
Instead of banging my head against the wall, I used it for some
weird tones. The intro of the album is the Strat with a drum
stick under the strings with a Digitech Space Station chiming
along. It’s actually my most popular album...
That’s why I love the Mustang because it gets that quirky Twee
Pop and Indie tone, and it approximates the early Beatles stuff
       well too.
Speaking of which, I think Lennon’s early tone on songs like
“Hold Your Hand” really sucks. When he got a Mustang, it was
       amazing.

Fella I played with in a band in High school for a while had a
Duo-Sonic, which was super similar to the Mustang. He took
umbrage with anyone who called it a Mustang. Was really touchy
       about it.
When I think back on those days...There were cork-sniffers by
the score even then, and there was not even a fraction of the
variety of electric instruments available today. Even fewer were
the variety of amplifiers, not to mention even fewer
       manufacturers of all of it.
Hell, being in Houston, there weren't even many music stores
that carried the stuff. I bought my first electric guitar at a
variety store, TG& Y. Some of the old timers here might remember
them. We generally called them Five & Dimes. It was a "Shinko",
if it was a certain model I have no idea what it was...Hell, I
knew so very little about guitars period and the only other
player I knew was my cousin Tommy, and he had a cheap acoustic.
I scoured the internet looking for a picture of it to no avail.
But do remember how cool I thought it looked, and later
realizing how butt ugly it was, and what an POS of a guitar it
was. A few weeks later I bought a 8 watt amplifier at
Montgomery Ward's, again, the old timers may remember them. It
was an "Airline", Montgomery Ward's store brand. At this point,
I had never even been to a real music store.
So I played by myself, teaching myself to play "Day Tripper",
"House of the Rising Sun", "Gloria", "Louie.Louie",
"Satisfaction", "Mr.Tamborine Man" etc. Then I became friends
with a kid that was an aspiring drummer...And all he had was a
couple of Remo practice pads...So we became "A Band".
Me wanging away on the Shinko and he pounding away on his
practice pads. We were all of 13 years old and somehow convinced
our parents we could be trusted to take the bus to downtown
Houston..To Mecca...H&H Music Store on Caroline street. The bus
ride was about an hour and here we were, two scrawny kids on a
big adventure. I saw more Black people on that ride than I had
       seen my entire life.
We arrived at H&H and when we walked in it was like landing on
another planet. My friend Robert was immediately drawn to a big
Ludwig trap set, with the silver finish "Just Like Ringo's!" on
it. My eyes swiftly drifted to the walls...which were covered
with guitars. Gretsch's "Just Like George's!" Rickenbackers,
"Just Like Roger's!" ...Except at that time I just knew these
guitars by their looks, not by their names...I didn't know shit
about guitars yet. Then amps....Dozens of amps...From little
Fender Champs to Big Ass Fender Dual Showmans, Vox Buckinghams
and Super Beatles, Gibson 2-12 combos. All kinds of stuff I
didn't even know the names of yet.
We spent about three hours in that store just staring and
dreaming...And learned quite a bit as well. A guy there, maybe
in his early twenties or late teens had a Beatle style haircut
and was playing a Telecaster through a Fender Princeton Reverb
and ripping out Ventures numbers. Me and Robert were both
memorized. He said "Hey guys! what's happening!' Really friendly
and I just blurted out "Man you're great!" . He laughed and
thanked me, and I asked him what guitar and amp he was playing
through and he told me, and asked me if I played and I said I
       was trying to learn.
A buddy of his was there and he was a drummer. These two guys,
Jerry and Mickey, ended up talking to me and Robert for at least
thirty minutes about music and instruments. Mickey took Robert
over to the drum section and Jerry pointed out different amps
and guitars to me identifying them and referencing them to
different musicians and songs. I was on cloud nine. The final
thing he did for me was ask me what chords I used. At that point
all I used was open majors and a coupe of others....Which he
snickered at and said...well those others are minors. He showed
me what was up with barre chords....I really didn't understand
it at the time but was intrigued...I thought Jerry was God at
that point. Then he and Mickey had to go and me and Robert were
just star struck, and still just wandering around in
Mecca.....After a bit we caught the bus home, talking about the
entire experience for weeks, completely enamored of those two
       kind guys and H&H music.
After the beginning of the following summer..We moved from the
South side of Houston to the West side. It shattered me really.
Lost all my buddies and my one musical compatriot. "The Band"
was fini~. I mowed lawns and worked at my Dad's shop for money
that summer and amassed a fortune of $150. There was a music
store within walking distance of the house, Brook Mays Music. By
then the Shinko's neck and developed a ridiculous warp...So what
did I do? Well, I bought a used Silvertone/Danelectro bass of
course! Because I was the New Kid in Town and bands were always
looking for Bass players. The Silvertone blew up the Airline 8
watt wonder in about a week......

       That’s a fantastic story!
I remember thinking every guitar got a different sound. If you
wanted a clean sound, you played one guitar, but if you wanted
distortion, you played another. I had no idea how amps and
pedals worked. My grandmother bought me a Romanian Amada
acoustic with really high action, and my instructor was taken
aback by it. Most of his new students had Squiers or something.
That Christmas, I begged my mom for a Rickenbacker like Peter
Buck played. I got a black Mexican Fender instead.
I learned every REM track I could, but didn’t get any good until
I got my SG the next Christmas. By then, I was into Randy
Rhoads, Kirk Hammett, and Zakk Wylde. When we had jazz band in
8th grade, I was the only guitarist who showed up and learned
the weird chords. I was also the only one who could play “Smells
       Like Teen Spirit.”
By the time 9th grade came, I was practicing scales every day
trying to build muscle so I could shred. An older guy and I
formed a band in his bedroom. His sister and best friend, who
had a thing for me, said I was the better player because I
actually played songs. He could pull off some fast licks, but he
was sloppy and a bad songwriter. That’s when I realized people
       preferred songs over solos.
When I recorded my first album, I had a Line 6 Spider II amp,
Boss DS-1, Visual Effects H2O Delay and Chorus, and the Digitech
RP-150 my uncle bought me. I didn’t know you could hook the
Digitech to a computer, so I played the drum machine and amp
sims through the Line 6. I remember setting up the opening blast
of effects for “The Experiment.” I laid my Saturn 63 in my lap,
turned on the Line 6 flange, delay, and reverb plus whatever
other effects and hit the low E. No one knew what made that ugly
       sound.
Didn’t have a really decent amp until I got a Fender Hot Rod
       Deluxe in 2009. I had a Marshall AVT 50, but it wasn’t a tube
amp. That’s around the time I started experimenting with Ambient
music. For the opening track on my sixth album, Chester, I
turned up the spring reverb on the Deluxe and played surf chords
on my Jazzmaster, and I finally arrived.
