Prospect Scouting

I don't have any groundbreaking ideas as of now, but I figured
that we could use this to brainstorm a method for prospect
scouting throughout the season.

You could do something with an assistant GM that has all the
real stats, say in any sort of 2 week to 3 week period,
depending on how good of a scout you have on your staff, he will
uncover certain stats. Better scouts will uncover better
attributes. Say you send a scout to Okafor, if your scout is
under average he may uncover stats you don't need, (3 point
shot, speed, stats that aren't needed for a big man.) They may
uncover good stats as well, post fade, but that attribute may
not be 100% correct. I'd say make it like 2-5 points off. If he
has a 76 for real no more than 71 or 81. Now obviously this
needs tweaks but I think it could work if you have a dedicated
person to help you out.
I'd definitely be willing to do something like this. Kinda Chad
Ford, write up some mocks. I mean obviously I'm not a GM so I
can help you out in any way you seem fit.

Well, it'd be a lot of work for you, but we could make it like a
weekly thing? As in, you can scout 3/5/however many prospects
per week, and there are three tiers. First scout tells you there
athletic attributes (speed, quickness, etc.) within 3-5 points.
Second tells you a relevant category (playmaking, rebounding,
post offense, shooting, etc.) within 3-5 points. Third tells you
potential within 5 points. Maybe a fourth time makes the numbers
more accurate by 1 or something like that.

I Like MediaMatts idea but Knicks-Nuggets has a good idea
How About the ability to scout Certain schools. and you can see
every player from that school but you can focus on one player? I
could Help with a list on which prospects are at which schools
of needed and the ability to scout max 3 schools at a time. with
1 Great scout and 2 average scouts
The great scout would give you the Stats within 3 (i.e. 86
mid-Range Shot he would tell you 83-89)
The average scout within 7. This causes you to send the Average
scout to look for players and the Great scout to good and get a
better read on the player.
Addition: I was bored so i Went and looked at how many schools
their are with a 1st round Prospect and its 20 different Places
and 3 of those are out of country
The best schools for prospects are Duke and Kentucky each with 3
but Kentucky has 3 centers all top level talent.

This all sounds really complicated and difficult to implement
for the commish.
I say forget specific attributes as I think it's kinda dumb that
you can see exact numbers before you draft a guy anyway.
We already get the grades for each player (inside scoring, post
defense, etc), that should be enough.
Then you pick x number of players to scout fully and that gives
you their potential grade.
I'd rather not see exact numbers anyway I think it's super
unrealistic.

I'm actually cool with that as long as we have some way of
getting potential for at least a few players

Yeah, potential is the only thing you really need to scout for.
If I see a guy has A 3PT Shooting, I don't need to know if it's
86 or 88.

Yeah but I think Potential is the most unrealistic thing. In
real life a team will know how good a guy is at shooting, but
how would anyone know that Manu Ginobili would turn into a
HOFer, or that Kwame Brown would bust out of the league?
I think knowing potential is so unrealistic, no team ever knows
how good the guy is going to be, otherwise Kobe wouldn't have
gone 13th.

They have a pretty good idea though.
Potential in 2k changes a lot also, I've had loads of guys I
drafted with A potential drop to C after a couple years and
never become better than 80. I've also had a couple of late
picks with C- and D+ potential skyrocket and become stars.
So we see a potential rating at the time of the draft, but it's
far from perfect.
