Proverbs 1 Hmmm

"The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of
understanding;
To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and
equity;
To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and
discretion.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of
understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of
the wise, and their dark sayings.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools
despise wisdom and instruction.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the
law of thy mother:
For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains
about thy neck." Prov 1:1-9
"The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;"Prov
1:1
Why Solomon? Jesus said, "...behold, a greater than Solomon is
here." Matt 12:42. Indeed, we probably all accept this... that
Jesus is greater than Solomon. Yet, here in the OT we find the
insight of the Holy Ghost invested in the written proverbs of
who? Solomon!
Who was this man? He was was the richest and the wisest man, but
according to scripture, he apparently missed the last boat:
"For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives
turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not
perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his
father.
For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians,
and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not
fully after the LORD, as did David his father." I Kings 11:4-6
So how and why would God use Solomon to instruct you and me?
"To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of
understanding;" Prov 1:2
Must not somehow come to recognize and know the ways of our own
flesh so as to not do what Solomon did? We must do better, but
how can we do better than this wisest of men, if not by
following one "greater than Solomon"? Is this not wisdom and
instruction? Is this not perception by and through the Holy
Ghost?
"To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment,
and equity;" Prov 1:3
Did not Solomon known and practice these things so as to be very
great? Jesus also said this:
"...He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do
also; and greater works than these shall he do..." John 14:12
Solomon may be excused because he did not have what we have. Did
not Jesus, in effect, state that believers would do greater than
he that was greater than Solomon?
Jesus did not only receive instruction in wisdom, justice,
judgment and equity. Were not those things a part of him?
Scripture says that Jesus grew, but it was not, I believe, in
these things. As the Word made flesh, was not his growth rather
in steady and continuous overcoming of all of the ways of man,
which tempted him making him want to sin? How could he overcome
so completely all of these things without already having the
wisdom, justice, judgment and equity from and/or of God?
His was in him! Doesn't ours need to be written in us? Hmmm...
The Holy Ghost!
"To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and
discretion." Prov 1:4
Simplicity and youth in the way of the flesh is not the thing
here. Oh, it may well be applied in the ways of man, for
certainly Solomon was a master, but a master in those ways
misses a more important thing, I believe.
A man can be 60 years old in his flesh, when he comes to the
simplicity and knowledge and discretion that God holds out now
for whosoever will? Natural wrinkles and age spots aside, the
very old carnal man may have within the subtlety of the simple
as well as the knowledge and discretion of the young man in the
Lord!
"That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not
having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should
be holy and without blemish." Eph 5:27
"And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and
become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom
of heaven.
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child,
the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." John 18:3-4
Where are we coming from and where are we going? Are we not led
by the Holy Spirit?
"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound
thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it
goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." John 3:8
"A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of
understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:" Prov 1:7
"He that hath ears to hear, let him hear." Matt 11:15
"To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of
the wise, and their dark sayings." Prov 1:6
"Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see
not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand."
Matt 13:13
"But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the
church; and let him speak to himself, and to God." I Cor 14:28
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools
despise wisdom and instruction." Prov 1:7
"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and
the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate." Prov 8:13
"My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the
law of thy mother:" Prov 1:8
And who then is our father? Is he not THE FATHER, the God who
created us? If not, why not?
And who then is our mother? Is she not THE CHURCH, which gave
birth to us anew through the power of the Holy Ghost?
"For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and
chains about thy neck." Prov 1:9

John,
Just goes to show how we "readers of Scripture" hear differently
from one another.
"To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man
knowledge and discretion." Prov 1:4
When I read "to give subtlety to the simple"
I see the verse meaning that the Proverbs were written to help
the "simple" man grasp that which is taught within the
Scriptures, but delivered in a subtle way (with much discretion)
which might be overlooked if one does not read carefully and
study diligently with a sharp eye-- with aid of the Spirit to
bring these things to light. So, the man is "simple"; the
teachings are often intentionally subtle and discreet.
And, also:
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake
not the law of thy mother
The instruction of thy father, I also see as
instruction of our Father in Heaven. But, when I see "forsake
not the law of thy mother, I see "mother" as Wisdom, herself.
To "understand the words of the wise and their dark sayings"
refers to the somewhat encrypted language of Scripture which
only the Spirit and diligent study will unlock; the "dark
sayings" are in shadow, hidden, not for all to see, but for some
to discover. The Spirit brings light. (in my
understanding)
