       When the war started, there were initially quite a few protests
       in Russia, but they were brutally repressed. The reality is that
       there was no way to protest in the streets, because they would
       immediately beat you and put you in jail. The government's
       repressive machinery managed to quickly win the fight for
       control of the streets, although they needed a lot of repression
       to achieve it. We must not forget that during the last two years
       there had been massive protests, in which hundreds of thousands
       of people participated, along with a sustained effort by the
       repressive apparatus to destroy these movements. They succeeded,
       at least temporarily.
       Now people can be put in jail just for making a public statement

       land you in jail. A municipal deputy in Moscow was sentenced to
       seven years in prison just for saying something critical against
       the war during a municipal council session4. When I post
       something in Russian, I never use the word “war,” because just
       using it means I could get a fine or go to jail. So you can
       imagine what the atmosphere is like.

       anonymously, the mood is very negative against the war. People
       are very critical and publish many very angry texts against the
       invasion. So the anti-war movement is very weak, but it has
       enormous potential.What role has the left played in the
       movement? What can you say, for example, about the positions
       taken by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
