Penang

There's nothing to touch it in Thailand. Its closest comparator
is Phuket, which is fine for a holiday but doesn't come close as
a place to live.
Well worth 10 minutes to watch for those who have never been.

Been there several times and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The
western coast is beautiful and the climate is perfect.
On the negative side, taxis are few and far between and the
airport is one of the worst (IMO) around.

It's a great climate as far as tropical climates go - no
horrible dry dusty cloudless season followed by hot season that
most of Thailand suffers for 7 months of each year. However,
compare the below to see the ideal south east Asian climate.

I'd choose Bandung's 4 celcius cooler average and less rain (but
still regular throughout the year) and humidity anytime. It's
basically the same climate that you get at the top of Penang
hill (same altitude as Bandung).
Grab taxis are a piece of cake and readily available in Penang
and work out even cheaper than Bangkok taxis. I've never used a
normal taxi in Malaysia. There's no point - with Grab the driver
already knows your destination and you already know the price,
which gets auto-charged to your credit card on arrival. There's
no need to even speak to the driver if you don't want to, but I
always chat with them and I've never had one that can't speak
English.
The airport is due for an upgrade soon to double its capacity

Last time I was there they didn't have Uber or Grab.
Used the hotel's shuttle.

I'd love to spend a week or three down there on Phuket's sister
island. It was actually founded by a Phuket resident Brit who
obviously got pissed off with the Thais so went to start a new
island a bit to the south :)

Beautiful hotels along the western side.
Doing a Landreth here - me and the missus spent a few days at
the Shangra-La many years ago - it was nice.
