The best and worst of Thai culture

I'm struggling to think of a best, so I'll start with a worst.
A local friend has spent the past six weeks living in a hotel
instead of in the house he bought with his wife a couple of
years ago. His reason is that his next door neighbour's dog has
been terminally ill for two months and howls in pain in the
garden every few minutes throughout every night. The Thai owner
refuses to put the dog down, even though there is a local vet
available who'll do it, because he doesn't want the bad karma
from putting down an animal. So this selfish peabrain, who
happily eats meat every day, is more concerned with his own
karma than with the wholly avoidable suffering of his pet and
neighbours.
It just goes to show that deep rooted religious and cultural
beliefs not only cause the grim shyte currently happening on the
eastern shores of the Med but also domestic misery.

I associate Thai culture with corruption, they are 101 on this
wikipedia list, with #1 being the least corrupt and #180 the
most.
Speaking with a farang in a bar a few years ago (he was in
Bangkok for business), he was lamenting losing out on a contract
with a Thai company...his bribe was less than what his
competitor could afford

I am still amazed how disconnected from reality we were when
living there,
like living an acid trip that would last years instead of hours
or days,
good times ;D
I might write a book, the shitshow was on 24/7, nobody will
believe me :p

Here's a best of - you can leave your engine running and go into
7-eleven for a couple of minutes and be 99% sure that your car
will still be there when you come out. That drops to about 95%
in the west.

Leave a safe two second stopping distance between you and the
vehicle in front and you can guarantee that within two minutes
some reckless Thai chickenhead, usually in a taxi or souped up
pickup and concerned only with arriving at his destination two
seconds sooner, will feel entitled to steal it from you.
Had one try to do it last night. Moved from behind me into the
left lane, floored it, and then tried to swing in front of me
just as the stopping distance gap was reducing to one second due
to the truck in front of me hitting its brakes. I suspect the
chickenhead is having a tedious Sunday morning trying to get his
smashed headlights repaired :)
