New Laptop

I've been through 4 laptops in 12 years, it's not the
electronics that fails but the plastic chassis where the laptop
slowly falls apart - hinges are the big problem - the metal nuts
are screwed into bolts that are pressed into the plastic of the
lid or case, so it's always just going to be a matter of time
before the plastic fails from opening and closing the lid a
couple thousand times
So this time I've decided to go for an all metal chassis and
like the look of the HP Envy. Not a bad price point, the HP
spectre is the top of the range (with the Envy below that) but
it seems a lot more money for little additional features
I will also give the AMD processor a shot this time - they are
the opposition to Intel and have in the last few years upped
their game to now produce a range of processors with as much
grunt as Intels

what brands have you used through the years ?
Thats 1 every 3 years. That's a little shorter than me. I went
one every 4 years since 2007.
My first was a Toshiba, second was a Toshiba (they were good in
the early 000's) Then a Sony Veio Bond edition. Then an Acer
which actually lasted 5 years. Now I am running another Acer
that i got for free used. I'll run this till it dies.
I've noticed laptops are getting more expensive with less bells
and whistles. This Acer from 2015 I have has Dolby virtual
surround sound. A few different shades of color which looks
sharp and a sharp looking circular power button, with some
status lights around it.
Laptops just aren't like this anymore. They are all one color,
the power button is just one of the keys in the corner of the
keyboard and there's no collaborations like Dolby or anything
like that. Its kinda gay.

I use a Chromebook because I hate MS / Windows. Bought it in
2014 and it's still going strong. Have been meaning to renew for
a year or so because it's stopped receiving updates from Google
but it still works faultlessly.

^ I recall you saying you purchased a Chromebook a couple years
back, good to hear it has lasted the distance & has been value
for money. With my new purchase I'll be getting Windows 11 so
I'm hoping it's a step up from 10 and not a backwards step as
new windows releases can sometimes be

Your laptop ownership is erringly similar to mine. I had
Toshibas for my first 2, then I went through a bit of a retro
period where I bought 2 quality second-hand Sony Vaios in a row.
They had a good reputation back in the day and I liked the look
of them. The Vaio I am about to retire has a 3rd generation
intel processor, the latest releases this year are 12th
generation laptops so it shows you it’s an oldie
I’m over the retro stuff – even the quality brands with plastic
frames fall apart eventually so I’m going more up market this
time with the metal chassis

There's no moving parts (hard drive etc) or huge software
installs to fok up.

I never heard of the HP Envy, Tinkles. I like the idea of the
metal chassis. My first laptop was an HP and I really liked it.
It was red, which I thought was unique.
My second laptop was an Acer, and then I was given a Macbook Pro
to use by my school when I worked in China. I really got to love
the Macbook. I was able to buy it out from the school quite
cheap when I left ($300). it is a pretty old one (2012). I used
it up until a few years ago, when the part where it closes
started coming undone. It also slowed down and is now pretty
unuseable.
I now use a Chromebook which was given to me to use by my
school. I don't like the Chromebook that much. I really want to
get another Macbook pro, but they are pricey and not a necessity
at the moment.

In the latest laptops there are no longer hard disk drives as
storage has all gone to the solid state drives (SSD's) and no
optical drive for cd/dvds so there are no moving parts anymore.
You can still buy a separate optical drive and plug it into a
port but they are no longer standard
I'm wondering what the sellers like Pantip Plaza are doing now
as all their software used to come on dvds. Are they still using
them or have they gone to USB sticks?
I was looking on ebay for a quality second hand machine but the
dreamers on there seem to think their used laptops should fetch
top dollar close to the value of a new 1 so they can all eat
dirt. I noted nobody is buying them. I bought new in the end

Thats crazy. Toshiba , Toshiba , Sony. I don't like how these
legacy brands like Toshiba and Sony stopped building laptops.
Their style was always better than western brands like Dell or
HP.
Yeah. I am thinking about getting a gaming PC just for the
higher build quality.
One deal breaker for me is light up keyboard. If it doesn't have
it , i dont want it. Which is another thing gaming pcs always
seem to have
