Next to it is a smaller skull, which is that of St Thomas as a
child.

With respect to your own faith Leslie, the bones or skulls of
long dead humans hold nothing more than traces of their DNA, the
veneration of such artifacts is against the Churche's own
teaching

It's morbid. The last order of nuns who 'taught' me, from
1966-68, wore a silver heart which contained a relic of their
founder. I also do not like the idea of bodies being cut up for
this purpose, though of course it doesn't hurt the person that
was. There's something unpleasant about it, except for
necessary post-mortems
The nuns I spoke of don't do that sort of thing now, haven't for
a very long time.

Relics of a certain kind are appropriate, usually a fragment of
bone enclosed in a small glass container is appropriate, I
think. Contrary to Val's comment about relics being opposed to
Catholic teaching. The altar in a church does carry a relic of
some kind, and the priest kisses the altar cloth just before
starting Mass... Where have you former Catholics been??
