Agree with Steve, the Smiths are simply annoying. Pretension
level on a par with U2.

Morrisey, the "vain and creepy" singer, is extremely vain and
pretentious (He insisted on his autobiography appearing as a
Penguin classic, and Penguin shamefully gave way), and has
flirted with far-right politics. I always think that using a
surname alone is rather pretentious (cf also Kennedy, the
       fiddler).
       [/quote]
If you mean Nigel Kennedy, I only ever heard him called, "Nigel
       Kennedy".

NK adopted "Kennedy" as his stage name some years ago, but maybe
he changed his mind and went back to his full name. In any case,
he is hugely talented, unlike Morrisey, and I like his left-wing
politics and opposition to Israel's polices in the West Bank.

I've also always known him by his full name, not that I've been
assiduously tracking his career over the years. On checking, I
see that he's 66 years old, a surprise as one always thinks of
him with that punk image. Apparently he was born in Brighton, so
given his propensity for different musical styles, it's a pity
he hasn't made an album entitled Brighton Rock. :D
The only other classical music performers I can think of known
usually by their surname only are that other famous violinist,
(Niccolo) Paganini and the tenor, (Luciano) Pavarotti. (All
classical composers are only known by their surnames, of
       course.)
