It's up to individuals what they call themselves. If a man
wants to identify as a woman, wear a dress and call himself,
"Sharon", I will call her, "Sharon", and refer to Sharon as
'her'. It's not my business. However it doesn't stop Sharon
       being biologically a man.

Nothing new. Danny La Rue made a stage career out of it.
If a person considers themselves to be a dog, say, that's fine -
just as long as they don't bark in my ear or expect to be taken
for walkies. (This naturally doesn't include priests who wear
       dog collars... ;D )

Yes but that is a different matter altogether and isn't a
       choice. Being trans is.

Just picking this bit out to respond to. I have of course read
your whole post, and will also check out the documentary you
       mention.
I would argue that being trans, ie one’s gender identity, is not
a choice in the same way as being straight or gay is not a
choice. The choice is whether to medically transition, or not.
And very diffcult these choices are because of the myriad
       consequences both physical and social.

Yes, the choice is whether or not to transition and that is a
very complicated and slow business. Each case is different.
There are people who transitioned when young and regretted it,
wanting to change back which is even more difficult. Others
decide to stay as they are but dress differently.
Regarding intersex, I looked at youtube and there are actually
quite a few documentaries about intersex people, with
interviews. 'Intersex: Boy or Girl? (Intersex documentary) Real
Stories' on youtube is interesting. It's quite an eye opener,
especially for those who had surgery and other treatment as
children in years gone by, which was brutal and largely
ineffective. A very sad and sobering business.

After my post of last night I watched quite a bit on youtube
about intersex people. Some of the interviews were extremely
heart rending. There are different types of intersex and some
cause other medical issues, eg with passing urine, which do need
       to be addressed.
However if society could just accept that people are made in
different ways and just because a person is not 'mainstream',
there isn't anything wrong with that, it would be far healthier.
Intersex people can live quite useful and fulfilling lives,
even have relationships, if they are just accepted as
       individuals.
Going back to transitioning, there are also insightful
interviews with people who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria
and underwent hormone treatment and surgery, some of them very
many years ago, later realising they had made a big mistake.
Doctors have a great role to play in both intersex and gender
dysphoria issues; there are some who almost promote
'treatment'. Parents are often not told the precise details of
their children's medical issues which can lead to quite young
       kids having unnecessary surgery.

I agree with you Lyn. I’m not qualified in any way and I’m not
personally affected in any way in these matters. My tentative
view is that surgery and hormone treatment each have massive
impacts on the physical body. My feeling is that the starting
point would be psychology/psychotherapy, because one’s identity
is multidimensional, and in relation to the world around us as
much as our internal world. Just my thoughts…

As a teenager I knew a girl who would get on her hands and
knees, sometimes go under the table, and bark. Not all the time
but if stressed. She had Tourettes though nobody knew much
about such things then. She was not treated well. However she
didn't consider herself to be a dog so I suppose that's
       different.

Just found this thread. I agree most with gwinnie. There is no
way for us to judge another in how they feel in what they
experience. I've encountered trans people who present so
realistically and sincerely that I find interacting with them as
their preferred sex very normal. I've also encountered trans
people who have turned me completely off as they seem more
concerned with making others conform and almost enjoy being a
victim when their demands are not met. I believe this kind of
victim bating is unhealthy and indicative of an emotional
disorder. But, even though transgender is listed in the DSM-5-TR
as a psychological disorder, I believe only victim-bating type
to qualify. Being gay used to also be listed in this book and
now we know that was wrong.

Here is a perspective of parents of transgender children.

I do read reports from Canada and the United States of teachers
'grooming' children in their classes in transgender ideology,
which gives them the false idea that they can change sex. These
teachers don't want the parents to know about it, and they have
been known to recommend sex changing drugs and surgery. That
latter does happen in England, in which case the parents would
       have to know about it.
In Canada the Premier of New Brunswick is opposed to transgender
ideology, and in Florida , Governor DeSantis has gone further,
       introducing legislation against it.
Along with transgender ideology there are public libraries which
allow 'drag' shows for very, young children. By a drag show I
mean a story telling time where Men dressed as women tell
       stories to kids.
I am totally opposed to that behavior.

So are many, Leslie. I know that from Mumsnet where people,
especially parents, are up in arms about it. There are also
quite a few high profile people, not prejudiced against anyone
genuine, who are vocal about it - JK Rowling for example.
       It will die down, Leslie.
