Yes, he was excellent as Mr. Bennett, real acting and with an
impeccable English accent, beyond the reach of most American or
Canadian actors. (One still blanches at Dick van Dyke's ghastly
'cockney' accent in Mary Poppins.)

John Mayall, famous and influential blues musician and writer,
died on 22nd July aged 90. I remember him well, he formed 'John
Mayall & the Bluesbreakers', I love that music genre.

For those in the UK, Roberta Taylor, star of TV and stage, died
aged 76 on 6th July. She had aggressive pneumonia after a fall
(that is scary). I loved her as Inspector Gina Gold in the
Bill, she was so authentic.

His humour, delivered in a deadpan, sardonic style, struck a
nerve, or a goldmine, and thus Bob’s career took off, in film,
on stage and, most of all, on television. He did not keep the
‘silence of Arsenius’, but, as we mentioned in that post, that
is not the vocation of most. And Mr. Newhart did keep a silence
of sorts, when it was necessary and called for, which is the key
to comedy (and to music). I recall his humour being mostly
clean, in an era when vulgarity was becoming vogue, and would
that we had more such wry, intelligent, thoughtful entertainment
in today’s world. All these years, and all of his shows I
watched, I did not realize that Mr. Newhart was a Catholic, and
remained faithfully married to his wife, Virginia, also a
Catholic, until her death. They had four children, which is
about four times more than most Hollywood couples.
May he rest in peace. (copied).

I assume you're talking about Bob Newhart, the American comedian
who died recently. Still, some link to an obituary might have
been useful.

I thought Bob Newhart was very funny. He wasn't the typical
standup comedian telling jokes. Most of his comedy routines were
amusing situations, especially phone calls where you just heard
his side of them. A classic example is his imaginary
conversation with Sir Walter Raleigh about the discovery of
tobacco. His driving instructor sketch is hilarious, too.
Back to John Mayall, he never struck stardom, unlike his famous
protegés such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), Mick
Taylor (Rolling Stones), etc. He was more concerned with the
music (authentic blues) than with fame and he stuck to it whilst
the others developed more commercial pop influenced styles.

The author, Edna O'Brien, died today aged 93. Didn't she do
well?
I loved her books when I was younger and read most of them from
the last century, none from this (so far). She was a great
character.

I was aware of her, of course, but never got round to reading
her books. She certainly had quite a life, and a long one at
that.

It seems strange now to think she was considered so
controversial a writer at one time. When I was a teenager at
school we were discouraged from reading her (which of course
stimulated interest), and I could never work out why. Her book,
'The Country Girls', was made into a film which I saw, with Sam
Neill playing a main role - 'Mr Gentleman'.
She also wrote screenplay.
A very talented woman.

We've had obituaries more recently than the above, surely? It
wasn't long ago we were talking about Maggie Smith. Anyway....
Quincy Jones has died aged 91. A legendary music composer,
conductor and producer who worked with many stars including
Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson. He organised President
Clinton's inauguration and the song, 'We Are the World' for
famine relief. He came from humble beginnings and said that
music saved him.
Didn't he do well to reach 91?
