Rex Murphy died today after a battle with cancer at the age of
77. He was born in Newfoundland and was a sharp witted
intellectual political columnist who could match wits with
anybody. He skipped two grades at school and was a Rhodes
scholar at Oxford university, England. He will be sadly missed .
I don't know if he was Catholic or not but he spoke as if he
was. May he rest in peace.

He was described as a 'Progressive Conservative' and wrote for
your favourite, the National Post. RIP
.............
I meant to post about Bernard Hill's death (05/05/2024),aged 79,
a few days ago but was side-tracked.
Bernard Hill was a prolific actor, well known to us in the UK,
popping up all over our screens. Many of us will remember him
from the TV series, 'Boys from the Blackstuff', in 1982 on BBC,
in which he played Yosser Hughes. The series was set in
Liverpool in Thatcher's reign and showed the problems of
ordinary people in difficult economic times. The character of
Yosser Hughes was poignantly portrayed as a man desperate to
find a job and hang on to his family. His struggle resonated
with many.
I saw him in 'Antony and Cleopatra' at Stratford-upon-Avon at
the end of the last century.

I know nothing of Bernard Hill, but of Rex Murphy. He was just a
great human being who told it straight the way he saw it. I came
across his writings through the National Post, one of only two
Conservative newspapers in Toronto. And obviously being
conservative in manner and belief* I enjoy reading the N.P.
It is a sad loss for Canada.
*What turned me from being a socialist was G.K.Chesterton .I was
expected to be Labour where I worked as a cost clerk in Leeds
and a member of the Labour Party onced said to me ." What have
you got to conserve?" That put me off the Labour Party. I didn't
answer her, but would today have said. My God given
intelligence.

The French singer Françoise Hardy, whose heyday was the 1960's,
has died at the age of 80. Her biggest hit, which I love, was
'Tous Les Garçons et Les Filles'. Very French...

I’d never heard of her. She was so pretty!

Perhaps because she never really entered the American music
scene, which was generally the fate of most popular female
French singers (or 'chanteuses'.) She was indeed very
attractive.

The screen actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88. He
was one of my favourite screen actors and I liked most of his
films, especially Nicholas Roeg's 'Don't Look Now' about an art
restorer who has lost his little daughter in a drowning accident
and goes with his wife (Julie Christie) to Venice to restore a
painting and work off his grief. The shock ending is one of the
most stunning in cinema, rivalled only perhaps by the endings of
Brian De Palma's 'Carrie' and Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining'.
Another favourite is Robert Aldrich's 'The Dirty Dozen',
enhanced by another favourite actor, Lee Marvin.
Most people probably assume that he was American, but he was a
Canadian, as are or were several other film actors like
Christopher Plummer, Jim Carrey, Ryan Gosling, Keanu Reeves,
William Shatner (Star Trek), Ryan Reynolds, etc.

Have not seen this but will look for it. He was also a favorite
of mine. From his later years, I really liked him in Joe
Wright’s Pride and Prejudice as Mr. Bennet (although, not as
good as Benjamin Whitrow’s Mr. Bennet in the 1995 version!)
RIP :(

I really liked him and, when interviewed, he was so funny. Like
you, Bev, I enjoyed his portrayal of Mr Bennett.
