The British actress Glynis Johns has died at the age of 100, not
in the first line of twentieth century film stars but a familiar
presence in films such as Mary Poppins.She was also famous for
her rendition of the classic song Send In The Clowns, which
Stephen Sondheim wrote especially for her. Her father was the
actor Mervyn Johns, who oldies like me will remember as a solid
secondary actor in many British films of the 1940's and 1950's.

I remember Glynis Johns very well. She had a distinctive
speaking voice. I saw her once being interviewed on television
where she put over 'Send in the clowns' extremely well, as it
was intended to be. Didn't she do well to reach 100?
I don't remember her father though he was a prolific actor. I
might recognise him if I saw something with him in it, on TV. I
note he was in 'The Sundowners' which is a vaguely familiar film
title, must look it up. He lived into his nineties, a long
living family - though Glynis's son, actor Gareth Forwood, her
only child, died at 62; he had cancer and then a heart attack.

This won't mean anything to those not in the UK but I read today
that Derek Draper, political advisor turned psychotherapist and
husband of TV presenter, Kate Garroway, died today of
Long-Covid, aged 56; he had a cardiac arrest on 31st December.
Derek had a painful, protracted struggle with the complications
from Covid, including some time in a coma. He did return home
but needed 24 hour care, could not walk or do very much though
was able to communicate. It was heartbreaking, he tried so hard.
His determination was admirable. Kate Garroway did a great deal
to highlight the plight of other victims who appeared to be
sidelined at the time, not receiving the care they deserved. I
was impressed and moved by a documentary about the couple,
including visits to and interviews with others in the same boat
but totally dependent on the NHS. I couldn't help thinking at
the time, "There but for the grace of God go I".
They seemed to be a lovely family and this will be devastating
for Kate and her children however, they did their very best and
Derek is now at peace.

On Glynis Johns' actor father, Mervyn, here he is briefly in the
short introduction to the 1942 film, Went The Day Well?, which
is about a group of German soldiers disguised as British
soldiers taking over a small village as a spearhead to a full
invasion. Very good suspenseful film. Mervyn Johns' Welsh accent
is notable.

Well, he was Welsh and, apparently, one of the most prolific and
successful Welsh actors of his time. His CV is impressive! I
still don't recognise him but never mind.

Tony Bennett has died, aged 96! He had a lovely, soothing voice
and a charming manner, as well as a social conscience. I had no
idea his life had been so varied, with many ups and downs, and
interesting.

American Rock and Roll guitarist, Duane Eddy, has died aged 85.
Us oldies will remember him, I particularly remember his hit
record, 'The Guitar Man' from when I was a kid.
