[/quote]Well, he did make it to his 60s, which wasn't bad given
his lifestyle. the bigger tragedy was the death of the lovely
Kirsty McColl, aged only 41, in a bizarre accident.

I don't think it is a good idea to compare tragedies; anyone's
demise can be tragic and often devastating to loved ones.
Kirsty's accident was totally unexpected and a shock, Shane
became ill because of things he had done (he had started
drinking aged 5 after his parents introduced him to Guinness. He
regularly binged. Drugs came later). They are both tragedies.
All we can hope is that they are now at peace and none of it
       matters any more.

I just read that. He was only in his sixties, had a brain
tumour. It's very sad, he was so talented and had an
interesting history. A real story of turning your life around.

Ryan O'Neal has died aged 82. He had chronic leukaemia and
later, prostate cancer. He certainly led a chequered life! I
fondly remember him as a young actor (when I was a young
person), in the TV series, 'Peyton Place', and later in the
film, 'Love Story', with Ali McGraw.

Yes, he's probably best known for 'Love Story', a three-box of
Kleenex film I never watched myself. It's responsible for the
phrase 'Love means never having to say you're sorry', which
spawned a whole series of 'Love means...' variants. He was
excellent in Stanley Kubrick's superb period film, 'Barry
Lyndon', and funny in Peter Bogdanovich's comedy 'Paper Moon'
along with his then young daughter, Tatum.

I haven't seen either of those films. They will almost
certainly be shown on TV now and if I catch sight of them, will
       watch.
Considering his earlier lifestyle, Ryan O'Neal didn't do badly
       to reach 82.
