I didn't know that but I'm really out of touch with the main
British acting scene and after some googling, I see that she
hasn't really been in the forefront, her main claim to fame
apart from Women In Love being a 1960's Dr. Who film and some
television. I don't know anything about her politics, which is
probably one of the best things you can say about actors and
other show biz people.

It's not Vanessa Redgrave's fault that she comes from a
privileged background, and you could argue that her defending
oppressed groups despite that is to her credit.

I agree. Indeed, high profile people are able to highlight
problems effectively because people know them; many do it up to
a point, including the royals. It is good to use your privilege
in that way rather than just accept it and do nothing for anyone
else. Vanessa Redgrave is also a very good actress.
We've gone off the point of Glenda Jackson's death. She gave up
a stellar acting career for a long time in order to go into
politics and I admire her for that.

The American singer Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96 in a
career spanning seven decades from the early 1950's until today.
Apart from having a fine voice, rivaling Sinatra's, he was
apparently an admirable person. He served in WW2 and was one of
the first GIs to liberate Dachau, which led to his later ardent
lifelong pacifism and support of US civil rights, including
marching with MLK.

Bit late in commenting on it but Michael Parkinson has died at
the age of 88 after decades of interviewing celebrities on
television. Anybody here have a particular interview that comes
to mind? I missed most of them due to living here in Spain
although I've seen several on youtube. He was rightly proud of
his Yorkshire accent but I thought that Beatles hairstyle he
adopted during one phase looked silly framing his craggy
features.

I can't say I ever noticed Michael Parkinson having a 'Beatles'
haircut. One thing about a haircut is that it grows out soon
enough. Often the television make up people have an idea about
how someone should look and try it out.
He had a good long life and I liked him very much.
Interviews I remember well and enjoyed were Muhammed Ali and
Princess Anne but there were many others.

gwinnie, it was very sad to read Sinead O'Connor had died aged
56 - I hadn't realised she was so young or that she lived in SE
London. We don't know the cause of her death but may she rest
in peace.
