Amis clearly agreed with that, and it's not something that
unduly preoccupies me, either. However, when you turn seventy,
you can't avoid the fact that the number of years you have left
isn't considerable and the grim reaper is much nearer than he
was when you were younger. You obviously hope for another ten or
more years, but the perspective is logically reduced timewise,
       realism not pessimism.

Just heard that Rolf Harris has died of neck cancer at the age
of 93. He was a great entertainer and one of the most popular
figures on TV in the UK for decades (well remembered from my
youth and his songs.) So sad that he'll now also be remembered
for his sexual assaults on youhgsters, like Jimmy Savile (whom I
never liked much, really creepy compared with Rolf Harris's
engaging personality.) Well, he had a very good innings but
perhaps it wasn't just his kangaroo that should have been tied
       down...

He's going to be buried at sea, between two little buoys.

I wish I had thought of that! I was trying to think of
something that linked to 'Jake the Peg', I'm sure you will.
       However Rolf Harris liked girls.
Two little girls had sweet little curls, one had a wooden
       leg.....
When I was at Sydenham High School he lived in a house just
behind it (that was before the Harris family moved to
Berkshire), in Border Crescent, so he had a good view of the
playing fields. Jolly hockey stick. He wouldn't have seen me,
I was hiding in the library.
A popular local figure, Rolf was often seen in the art shop in
the high street. I had his autographed photo.
It's sad and weird. I feel sorry for his wife and daughter; the
latter has apparently written a book about her father.
I recently watched the documentary about him: 'Rolf Harris:
Hiding in Plain Sight'. It was quite an eye opener.

There's an interesting article in The Telegraph today prompted
by the death of Rolf Harris and his fall from grace due to his
multiple cases of sexual abuse of minors. I found the paragraph
quoted below disturbing. At least in the past, men with these
warped inclinations had no means of satisfying their desires
other than by directly assaulting children and adolescents, and
that can't have amounted to significantly high numbers. Now,
they can access Internet sites full of child pornography (and
other kinds of the genre.) We've talked about AI and its dangers
for society elsewhere, but the Internet also poses its own
threats. When you open Pandora's Box, don't be surprised at what
       flies out.
"In the past three decades we have lost our innocence as a
society and become much more clear-eyed about the sexual abuse
of children. But while we may be more alert to the dangers there
is, according to the charity Internet Watch Foundation, an
epidemic of child pornography available on the internet. The
disturbing truth is that millions of people, mainly men, are
regularly watching the sexual abuse of children."

Agreed, it is horrible. There are some who think it is not as
bad as actually doing it; yes, honestly, they do say that, but
conveniently forget that the children they are watching are
actually being abused and by watching, they are
encouraging/facilitating it. What is more some people start
watching, then become hooked and escalate to trying it.
Goodness only knows what triggered Rolf Harris, we can never
know what goes on in a person's mind. The documentary gives
some clues. His daughter, Bindi, has apparently written a book
trying to explain it (I think I may have already said that),
poor woman. Her first marriage broke up because her husband
could not tolerate her support of her father. I hope she is
free now, if that is possible, and her poor old mother won't be
       around for much longer.
All sorts of dodgy stuff pops up on the internet and it takes a
while to learn discernment. No sooner do you block one than
       another appears.
The police, some social workers and people involved in advocacy
for victims, or charities, have to see this stuff. It must be
difficult to stomach; how you get such ugly, shameful and
frightening images out of your head I don't know. Of course
they are trained and do take breaks from it but they're
       vulnerable. I know I couldn't do it.

I'd add that a major factor is the sheer accessibility of the
Internet and the enormous numbers of people who access it. Never
before have such huge swathes of the population had access to
all the material available and the same might be said of the
rest of the social media. It's nothing less than a social
revolution, albeit a non-violent one (at least at first hand.)

Glenda Jackson, CBE, died yesterday aged 87.
She was my favourite actress when I was a young person, loved
her as Elizabeth 1st in 'Mary Queen of Scots' and the TV series,
'Elizabeth R'. I remember her in so many films, most recently I
re-watched 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' in which she starred alongside
Peter Finch and Murray Head (the Murray Head character was
having an affair with both her and Peter Finch, that was quite
avant-garde for the early 1970s). She was just so good. Her
portrayal of the poet, Stevie Smith, was very moving; I
understand she also played that role on stage but I only ever
saw her act in film or TV.
Later on, I used to see her occasionally coming out of
parliament, crossing the bridge carrying stacks of papers. She
was a dedicated Labour back bencher MP for many years.
Her son, Daniel, is a successful journalist.
Blackheath will not be the same without Glenda! RIP and thanks
       for the many memories.

Well, she was certainly a fine actress but I never liked her
politics, although at least she never went as extreme as Vanessa
Redgrave from a privileged elite acting family. And I know
actresses don't have to be overtly feminine or sexy but I always
found something slightly masculine about her, voice included. My
       problem.
I remember her in the film version of D.H.Lawrence's 'Women In
Love' with the Alan Bates character spouting modish twaddle,
dismissed rightly by the Oliver Reed character as "despicable
nonsense" (then as now.) I found the lovely blonde forgotten
actress Jennie Linden character far more beddable than Jackson.
       ;)
Each to their own view, though. It's the acting in the end.
I see that I forgot to mention that Glenda Jackson was from the
North of England, one good point in her favour. ;)

It is indeed. Glenda was certainly a versatile performer, I
wish I had seen her on stage.
Jennie Linden is still going strong, with her sweet smile, at
       83.
