Yes I remember that well too. We used to sing that as kids.

Gordon Lightfoot is dead aged 84. He was a Canadian folk singer.

Yes I remember him well. Someone of my acquaintance posted
about it four times on FB! I said, "We got it the first time",
and wished I hadn't. He was excellent.

From The Telegraph (copied as paywall would prevent some from
seeing the article):
"Monty Python star and TV presenter Michael Palin's wife of 57
years, Helen, has died at the age of 80. The actor, 79, shared
the news of her death on his website. He wrote: "My dearest wife
Helen died peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She
had been suffering with chronic pain for several years, which
was compounded a few years ago by a diagnosis of kidney failure.
We first met on a summer holiday on the Suffolk coast when we
were both 16 and we married in our early 20s. Two and a half
weeks ago we celebrated our 57th wedding anniversary. Her death
is an indescribable loss for myself, our three children and four
grandchildren. Helen was the bedrock of my life. Her quietly
wise judgement informed all my decisions and her humour and
practical good sense was was at the heart of our life together."
"
So sad when one of the partners dies after decades of marriage.
I wrote this in the comments section of the article:
"I recall reading an article some years ago by someone who had
also lost his beloved wife after decades of marriage. I was
struck by his use of the phrase 'the empty room'; ie. the total
absence of the loved one, the unaccustomed silence, the haunting
memories no longer shared, waking alone after dreaming of happy
times together. Heartbreaking..."

Very sad indeed, I empathise with Michael Palin at this time
poor soul.

I hadn't heard of his death. I liked him as a teen.

Just read that Martin Amis has died of esophageal cancer at the
age of 73. On checking, I see that his father, Kingsley, died at
the same age, but following a stroke. I've never read any of his
novels.

Neither have I. It's surprising in a way that neither of us have
considering he started writing novels when we were in our
twenties. I used to devour the books section in the Sunday
paper and can't say Martin Amis's books ever appealed to me,
However 'Dead Babies' ('Mood Swingers' in the USA, far better
title, less brutal), was made into a film which I might watch if
it comes on TV. It was well cast with many recognisable young
actors, who are now not so young :).
Martin Amis's later, non fiction, work seems interesting.
Oesophageal cancer is a particularly aggressive cancer, I hope
he died peacefully, poor soul.

On the first point, his last book does sound interesting. It's
what he called 'a novelised autobiography' ("86% true" in an
interview) and amongst other matters, looks at three of the most
important people in his life, the poet (and best friend of his
father) Philip Larkin, his favourite American novelist, Saul
Bellow (mine too, with John Updike) and his closest friend
Christopher Hitchens, who by a sad coincidence also died of the
same cancer. Hitchens attributed that to heavy smoking and
drinking. Amis doesn't seem to have been a heavy drinker by his
own account but in various photos accompanying his obituary in
The Telegraph, he's clearly smoking. (During an interview he
described his father, Kingsley, as a heavy drinker - "by the end
of his life he was putting away a bottle of Macallan single malt
a day, before moving on to gin and Campari.")
As for the second point (the cancer), in a 2020 interview
accompanying the obit (when he was 70), he said: "The writer VS
Pritchett once wrote that, after 70, you don’t really think
about anything else but dying. ‘I don’t find that and I
certainly have no metaphysical fear of death. But the
onerousness of dying, the sweat of death… it is an arduous
business. And I’m very afraid of my life becoming medicalised.’"
I do hope he didn't suffer too much in the end. It's a dreadful
cancer (just the thought of not being able to swallow fills me
with dread.) I also agree with his comment about 'the
onerousness of dying'. I just hope my own end is quick, and
preferably painless.

Yes.
People aren't generally preoccupied with death once they are
seventy, at least not most people. It depends what their life
is like and how they feel.
I had many periods of dwelling on death when I was younger, now
I don't care though, like you, hope it isn't too bad when it
comes.
