Amen to that. He was a good man and a striking figure with
lovely black hair. I used to see him out and about in central
London in the 1980s.

Was he hell a good man - he was Thatcher's Chancellor, which is
condemnation enough, but on top of that he was also a Brexiter
and a climate change denier (not "skeptic" - that's what they
want to be called). As for tax cutting - taxes pay for things we
all need, like schools, a free NHS, police, roads, housing, etc.
I for one am willing to pay more tax within reason, provided
it's spent wisely.
Good riddance to the old bastard.

I tend to agree. I did not know the man so he may have been
good, but he was a lousy politician.
This idea that tax cutting is intrinsically a "good thing" needs
to be avoided, or at least not followed as if it is some holy
grail of an answer to our economic woes. It isn't. It never has
been.

I was talking about him as a person, not politician and I don't
remember much about his politics. By all accounts he was a
decent chap. Thatcher's government was shite so all her
ministers were tainted.

I was looking for this thread some days ago and couldn't find
it, also got a bit distracted by something else. My intention
had been to post about the demise of Paul O'Grady, a very
popular entertainer here, much loved. He died suddenly from
cardiac arrhythmia at 67, here is his funeral:

An episode of 'For the Love of Dogs' was aired on television on
the evening of his funeral. He will be very much missed.
...................
I read about Barry Humphries during the night, Greg. It's
marvellous that he reached such a good age. I saw him on stage
during the 1980s and it was a hilarious show. Dame Edna ended
it by throwing gladioli to us in the audience. Friends and I
went home on a high!

I'd always assumed that Humphries was gay, thinking about that
other entertainment artiste in drag, Danny LaRue, who was.
However, it seems Humphries was married four times and had four
children from those marriages, so Dame Edna was simply a stage
persona, the most famous of his little group.

Yes. I remember his wife (dunno which one), saying in an
interview that it was like being married to a husband and
mother-in-law all in one.

Len Goodman, champion dancer and judge, in recent years known as
a Judge on Strictly Come Dancing, died at 78. He would have
been 79 tomorrow. Apparently he had bone or bone marrow cancer,
depending on reports (I know he had a melanoma a couple or three
years back which was treated), however was not ill for a long
time and died peacefully.
He was a great character and enjoyed his life.
RIP Len and thanks for the memories.

Harry Belafonte has died aged 96. I was such a fan when
younger, he was often on TV in my childhood and everybody seemed
to like him. However there was so much more to admire about the
man which I realised later on. He had an extremely interesting
life.

Apart from his classic songs, I well remember the novelty song,
There's A Hole In My Bucket, here in a live performance with
Odetta:
