       Obituaries

I thought I would create this thread about people who have died,
the name can be changed if necessary.

I see Betty Boothroyd has died aged 93. She was the first woman
speaker of the House of Commons.

Steve will find that particularly interesting as I recall him
saying once on the old forum that he was presented with his Open
University degree by her (he actually posted a photo of the
presentation if my memory serves me correctly.) There haven't
       been any further female Speakers.
As for the thread title, I think the other one you came up with
was better: 'Dead but not forgotten'. Obituaries sounds a bit
too newpaperish and, in any case, are always accounts of the
deceased person's life, which isn't going to happen in these
       fairly brief posts.

Yes indeed - I got my degree from her. She was Chancellor of the
       OU at the time.

This may not mean much to non-jazz fans, but the great American
saxophone player and one of my favourite jazz musicians, Wayne
Shorter, has died at the age of 89. Apart from his work in all
the be bop era of the 1950's and the 1960's, his time with Miles
       Davis's second quintet is legendary.

Nigel Lawson, the Chancellor of the Exchequer under Thatcher,
has died at the age of 91. He was known for his regular
tax-cutting. I didn't know he was from a Jewish family. He had a
daughter he rather egotistically named Nigella (I think he
invented it), which has always reminded me of Nutella, the
chocolate products manufacturer, appropriate for a woman
       involved in cookery books.

I saw that earlier, must admit I didn't know he was still alive.
I knew his first wife, Vanessa (Nigella's mother), died many
years ago at 47. His second wife died about ten years ago I
       think. He did well, 91.
I knew he was Jewish. Nigella made a TV programme, with her
siblings, about her Jewish roots which was quite interesting.
(His daughter, Nigella, is a gorgeous woman who used to do very
cookery programmes. Lots of men enjoyed watching them :-) and
women admired her. Haven't seen much of her in recent times.
She was happily married to a John Downing, an award winning
press photographer, for a lot of years until he sadly died. She
then married Charles Saatchi of West London art gallery fame but
he was quite brutal and they divorced. However that is about
Nigella, not Nigel who is the subject of this thread.)

Nigel Lawson did not believe in climate change, and was a tax
cutter, both things we have in common. He was also very good at
his job by all accounts. May he rest in peace.

Amen to that. He was a good man and a striking figure with
lovely black hair. I used to see him out and about in central
       London in the 1980s.
