This morning outside church Mary spoke to a man whom she taught
in grade 2.He said he was 60, but looked younger. He has two
children, and has the same dislike of Trudeau as we do. He
       ruined the country.
I said to Mary,'He could read then?' Yes, and I taught him
everything. (The students practically without exception could
read in grade 1,.) The reason being Sister Joseph Marie, a
member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame was their teacher.
Religious sisters didn't get paid as did Mary and other
teachers. They worked for practically nothing. May Sister Rest
       in Peace.

Today, is the Feast Day of St.Pius X, one of my favorite Saints.
Mass was said for him today in many churches. His encyclicals
spelled the death knell of Modernism.

Strange to think Mary taught someone who ruined the country,
       Leslie. ;)

Did you like Pope John XX111, Leslie? I know he was generally
regarded highly at the time and after he died, people talked
about him with admiration. I wasn't particularly interested at
that time but am a bit now.

I read a bit about Pope John 23rd today and have to say I was
impressed, not at all surprised people raved about him.

I neither liked Pope John XX111 nor disliked him. The only
thought I had about him was this.
Why on earth (or heaven) have Vatican 11.The Church was doing
       quite well .

From an article on the subject of Councils:
"In the case of Vatican II, it was called by Pope St.John XXIII
for this purpose: to renew the Church in order to more
effectively proclaim Jesus Christ and his teachings to the
world. In his opening address at the Council, John stated that
the greatest concern of the Council was that Catholic
doctrine—church teaching, the teachings of Jesus—“should be
guarded and taught more efficaciously,” that is, more
effectively. Our last pope, Pope Benedict, was a theological
expert at the Council, and shortly after it concluded he
summarized its purpose this way: “Ultimately, the Council sought
simply to do at the present time what the Church’s proclamation
is supposed to do at all times: to lead the way on the journey
of faith.” And his predecessor, St. John Paul II, who was a
bishop at the Council, wrote after the Council that its purpose
was to answer these fundamental questions: “What does it mean to
be a believer, a Catholic and a member of the Church?” "

I remember Vatican 11 very well and it was a good thing. It
didn't achieve everything that people wanted but the Church
isn't a democracy and wheels move slowly.
Having read a lot about him, I do admire Pope John XX111.
Leslie is the only Catholic I have come across who is
indifferent to him, most speak of him favourably.
I remember more than twenty years ago when Pondero did not diss
       Vat 11.

Not wishing to steal thunder from Lyn's post, but just a
suggestion. You're both using the number 1 in your posts but
that ends up in 'Vatican 11' suggesting it was Vatican Eleven!
The normal usage is the capital letter I, so you get Vatican II
and Pope John XXIII. (Another example would be Henry VII, not
       Henry V11.)

I didn't diss Vatican II Lyn, that I recall from those far off
days. I complain about it now because of its bad effects on
Catholic teaching . I give it time to evolve, and now I am
       disgusted with the results.
For example, the deterioration of Catholic teaching in Catholic
schools (my wife taught there) and she would agree.
The abolition of Latin. The change from Latin to English in the
Mass I found quite upsetting. As a convert to Catholicism in
1953 I liked Latin prayers with English sub titles - (sub titles
were only necessary for beginners ) but every Missal prior to
the change over to English had them. So there was no valid
excuse from Catholics who said they couldn't understand what was
       going on.
Fortunately, we have a movement to bring back the Latin Mass.
