Of course, but I intend to change my vote if possible.* I have
already stopped donating to both federal and Provincial
Conservative parties. They have been phoning us twice a day for
days.The Popular party of Bernier is Pro-Life, and Catholic
while the fed Conservative Leader is not Pro Life. And the
Christian Heritage Party while good is largely composed of
Protestant Westerners. I have let my membership in it lapse.
In England politics is always a subject of conversation, usually
in favour of the Labour Party where I lived. The Conservative
candidate for Batley and Morley in those far off days always
forfeited his deposit for lack of votes. Once I was told in the
office where I worked as a twenty one year old. "What have you
got to conserve." by a Labour Party supporter in .Leeds.
*If possible meaning, if a suitable candidate is running.

We had a couple of discussions or so with the priest in charge
of our two day retreat. I pointed out that the Americans were
much more religious than are Canadians, based on my experience
in Florida. I was not contradicted. Most there had not travelled
to Florida much ,if at all. Two of them were currently on strike
from the CRA offices in downtown Toronto. They did comment on
the sad state of affairs in the Catholic Church in Canada. I
said, "Bring back the Latin Mass". The priest said little or
nothing to that comment. I did meet again with about four
retreatants I knew years ago ,but I haven't had a retreat for,
is it three or four year now ?. I forget. Only 15 retreatants
attended this one. In the past we have had fifty or more. I
blame the pandemic for that.
I left early after this Sunday Mass as I didn't get much sleep
last night , it was cold even with two blankets.. I forgot to
complain about that. The food was good though.

Next time pack a thermal blanket, Leslie. I wouldn't have been
happy cold but might have improvised, ie putting a coat on top
of the covers.
Nice to know the food was good.

I'm not answering for Leslie, Bev, he will come back later and
probably add. However I do know why some Catholics want the
Latin Mass. It is because wherever you go in the world, the
language in which the Mass is said will be the same. There are
churches over here who do one Latin Mass a week, bigger ones
maybe twice, the Cathedrals do some as well.
I used to go to Mass sometimes whilst working in central London
at a church in Marylebone, also dropped into Westminster
Cathedral on occasion. A couple of times there was a Latin Mass
and I was aware of how good it was for the people in the
congregation whose did not speak much English. Being central
London that was not at all unusual for some residents and of
course loads of tourists. I quite liked it, it was beautiful
and before anyone says anything, you don't have to know Latin
well to be able to understand, Catholics learn what many words
and all the phrases mean in their own language. However I do
think the Church was correct to change most of the Masses to
languages of the people, it's friendly and easier for people who
only attend occasionally. I wouldn't campaign for bringing back
the Latin Mass because it has never really gone and I doubt it
ever will, it just isn't commonplace.
None of that is any of my business because I haven't been to
Church since I don't know when and have deeply analysed (still
am), my own beliefs. End of. It may be considered a good idea
to move some of these posts to the Orthodox Religion section but
that's not up to me.

First of all because I prefer it. The Latin Mass has been the
backbone of church worship for over a thousand years. I haven't
look up the date it started in one form or another. The
Tridentine Mass in Latin goes back to the start of the
Reformation in its present form starting with. "Introibo ad
altere Deo. Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam. From
memory. It was familiar to all Catholics prior to 1963 and the
Novus Ordi.In Englishwas forced upon us by a group of periti at
Vatican 2, (one of whom , the expert? Fr.Baum * was stationed at
the Marylake monastery I attended this past weekend. Prior to
Vatican 2. He got married and taught at the U of T, my wife was
one of his students. She didn't like him. I think the
Augustinians long ago disowned him.) Walking down to the dining
room there is an oil painting of Mendel, the botanist,the
scientist. But none of Fr. Baum.
I hope the return of the Latin Mass I knew, will mean a revival
of that Catholic Church it badly needs.
*Father Gregory Baum - look him up. I think he was born or
educated in Switzerland.

Thanks for both your answers Lyn, and Leslie. This has led me to
ask another question: Do Catholic educations or Sunday Schools
teach a translation of the latin in different (where
appropriate) languages. I ask this because I wonder if actually
understanding the words being spoken is important or not.
When studying the period of the 16th century Reformation, I
learned that one of the reasons for translating the latin into
the common vernacular was so that the uneducated folk could
understand what was being said, and I agree that this was
important in any religion.

They don't generally teach Latin, Bev, it's all native tongue.
Only a few school children do Classics nowadays. However if
somebody did stray in to a Latin Mass, they would find a
translation. I expect a regular Mass attender would understand
because of the order of the Mass. However it is much better to
hear it in your own language and I certainly get the point about
people who are illiterate.
