Good evening, Leslie.
Palliative care for the elderly (if they are in pain or inform,
not all elderly people are(, seriously ill adults and children
is not euthanasia.
That was talked about a few posts up following your previous
post on the subject.
Please read back a bit, Leslie, because the discussion went on
to other things, inspired by something you said in earlier post.
Your opinion is required on that (at least by me :-)), if you
have time, even if you don't want to talk about palliative care
at the moment. Thanks.

The difference between palliative care and MAID (euthanasia) is
the intent of the patient. Then it becomes complicated in
Canada, It is all politically structured thanks to Trudeau's
legislation. The lawmakers quibble about the meaning of words or
phrases when allowing MAID or on rare occasions -depending on
the doctor -disallowing MAID. Apparently you don't have to be at
death's door to get Euthanasia. Question, should it be allowed
if reasonably certain say next week you will die, or are you
scared of being homeless next winter and being on the streets in
the cold? That was an example given by a man on a TV documentary
last night. He said I don't want to die but if I am going to be
homeless and on the street in winter again, I want to have MAID,
therefore I am applying now for MAID in advance .I fell asleep
before the program ended so I don't know the outcome.
In palliative care you know in advance you are dying soon and
you know there is little you can do about it. You want to be
comfortable, and you know you will be looked after for a period
of weeks or so. With MAID which is definitely euthanasia, you
can have it done tomorrow or the next day and it is all over in
an hour or less.

Now, Bev, I have given your question some thought. I recall my
brother who had palliative care at the age of 87. He said that
he would be on palliative care until his vital organs failed.
That is what he was told . I was later told my brother died
peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. That would be for some
weeks. Whether he was given a shot of morphine or not at the end
I don't know. But he would have been unconscious at the end.
MAID would have ended it differently. If he had lived in Canada
there would have been a pre arranged time for MAID and he would
have been conscious before he was euthanized and he would have
wanted to die, and asked to be killed. The difference between
MAID and Palliative care is in the intent of the patient as I
said.
My own religious beliefs are that euthanasia (suicide) is a
mortal sin and if you die unrepentant you go to Hell.

That's harsh, Leslie, and that is one issue in which I really
feel it would be beneficial for you to discuss in real life.
There must be a priest, a group, that does just that and many
priests would be happy to talk one to one.
Many people who commit suicide are overwhelmed by physical pain
and depression. I realise some of us have and/or still are
sometimes similarly overwhelmed. However those who are
seriously suicidal have lost that strange sense of wellbeing,
determination and hope. Depression (reactive or clinical), has
a knock on effect on the physical body.
At the last hospital in which I worked (Neurology and
Neurosurgery), there were clinical specialists who gave
counselling/psychotherapy to such patients which was often
effective; if you think about it, being able to confidentially
articulate your pain and lack of hope with a kindly, empathetic
and non judgemental person is an interesting thing to do,
something to look forward to.
However there are other patients who are by nature diffident and
non-complainers, always blaming themselves for things, who
cannot be reached or at least not in time. More still there are
patients all over the country who do not have such specialties
in their health authority.
Some things are beyond understanding. I do not have a hotline
to God, am not known for having religious experiences. However
there has been the odd time when an issue has occupied my mind
and prayers for a while when I feel God has told me something
about it, truth.
One of those things is my absolute certainly that we cannot
judge what happens after death to anyone, only God judges. All
we can do is pray for them. However we can be confident in the
love Jesus has for everyone, He went through so much when he was
physically on the earth. He said He had come for sinners, the
righteous can look after themselves.
I knew a Catholic priest who said that when he eventually went
to his judgement by the Father, he knew Jesus would be by his
side with His arm around his shoulders, saying, "I died for
him". I found that comforting and profound.
Now please will you address the question raised about why you
mentioned Trudeau going to a Coptic Christian service at the end
of a post about assisted suicide.* We went on to talk about the
Copts but we hoped you would come back and assist. *Page 2
16th April onwards. You said Trudeau's hypocrisy was
illustrated by his going to a Coptic service.
Good night, see you soon. I hope everyone is in the land of
Nod, I was for quite a while and intend to return now.

Leslie, thank you for your responses which I take on board,
particularly your opinion of Trudeau insulting the Coptic Church
by taking part in a service whilst unrepentant. It doesn't
matter if I do not agree with you on any bits, I can see your
points of view.
All is well!

Echoing Lyn here in my response to your answer about palliative
care versus euthanasia, Leslie. I would only add that it is
strictly a matter of belief on whether one is damned for all
eternity for consciously participating in the end of ones life.
Based very much on Lyn's post about it, I believe God is
merciful and would not damn someone just for wanting to escape
terrible pain on this earth. But, as I said, it is a matter of
belief.

Hell fire and damnation was regularly preached at one time, even
in my lifetime, the aim being to keep people in line. Children
were traumatised by such stories. Roses grew up hearing that
and was terrified. I also heard it a couple of times at school
when I was a child and it upset me for a short while.
As for 'a matter for belief', surely we all believe that only
God can judge a person when they die, he sees the whole person
and their entire life, we don't. It's really strange (and
unpleasant), that anyone would be so ready and eager to believe
that God condemns souls to everlasting torment.

The Hell fire damnation story was broadcast by some of the more
radical Protestant preachers of yesterday.I have never heard the
damnation line preached by the Methodist Church or the Church of
England Churches I ever attended; and certainly not by the
Roman Catholic Church I ever attended Mass in.
On other more political news. The strike of Canadian government
employees has begun. The full details are not completely out
yet. The federal government work on passport issuance,
immigration details and tax return processing has ceased., don't
expect a government cheque from the CRA in the mail.

I too have never heard it preached in a Catholic church, Leslie,
though no doubt it was in an earlier era. All the denominations
seemed to do that at one time, particularly the more extreme
ones, Biblical literatists etc. Horrible.
