I hardly ever look at that thread as I regard it as boring. I've

Yesterday, while waiting for the bus to take us to the theatre I
spoke to a man who said he was a Civil Engineer, when I had
asked him if he was a teacher,. He was from Devon and was too
young for National Service. He did say the UK should not have
left the EU. I did not reply to that as I don't agree. His name
was Ed and he was the first Englishman originally I have met for
ages.

Not a question of that. It's just a case of the degree of
interest in what the weather is like in someone else's location.
I don't know whether forest fires come under 'weather'.

Under Weather comes the fires which have just broken out in
British Columbia. I wonder if we will be next in Ontario?
We have too many trees, thousands of hectares of them, doing
nothing, just sitting there in all of Canada.
Canada is unique. We have (with the Americans) the longest
undefended border in the world, and we Canadians have most lakes
and few deserts. On the Liabilities side of the national Balance
Sheet we have Trudeau. But Canadians are fighting back on the
2SLGBTQ front by resisting as they did Communism in Poland, even
though politically overcome and ruled by it. When leaders attack
the family to destroy it they always lose in the end.

I would suggest that most people would understand the title 'Our
weather' as pertaining to weather conditions of the moment, such
as rain, snow, cold, heat, etc., and that's what all the posts
here and on previous forums have consisted of. Those forest
fires may have been caused in part by excessive dry spells, but
they are not 'weather' in themselves, any more than melting
icecaps are.
Still and all, let's just leave it there and hope the fires will
be under control soon.

A woman in Glendon, Alberta has been arrested for setting a
number of forest fires. There are other reports too of similar
incidents. I think human activity is behind much of it? What
else can it be. Lightning occurs during rain storms and Alberta
has had little rain, so that cannot be the cause.

Leslie, it's not a very happy thought that someone may have
deliberately started fires, accidentally yes, yet the woman you
mentioned has been arrested which indicates it is so:

I particularly noted this bit (though the writers appear to have
the maths wrong): In a normal season, half of Canada's
wildfires are started by lightning, but those fires account for
more than 85% of wildfire destruction. The other half are

I don't want to create a storm in a teacup ( :D ) or be overly
pedantic but let's clarify matters here. Fires in themselves are
not 'weather', which is a meteorological phenomenon. (I think
the expression Fire Weather in your first link is an oxymoron.)
The causes of such fires may well be due to certain weather
conditions, of course, such as extreme dryness due to drought
and lightning strikes igniting flames, but if the fires were
started by human agency (ie. arsonists), they wouldn't come
under 'weather'. In fact, your links connected with the former
just appear as a book review in the first one and general news
about weather in various places around the world in the second
(ie. the common thread is the weather, not fires.)
Newspaper reports may connect forest fires with weather
conditions, as the examples quoted show, but my quibble is
simply with putting them here in the forum under Our Weather,
which has always been just about the weather conditions (rain,
snow, cold, etc. etc.) where you live. If there were fires in
your area, I suggest you'd probably mention them (if at all) in
the Chat section, not Our Weather. That's all.
Just to add that deliberately started fires are unfortunately a
fairly common occurrence here, especially in summer, and it's
pitiful to see on the news whole areas of forest, especially on
hillsides (more visible), blackened by charred trees and which
will take years to regenerate. I can't imagine what perverse
satisfaction these twisted individuals get out of it. There are
also many such fires caused by people carelessly tossing a
lighted cigarette butt into the undergrowth and picnic fires not
adequately snuffed out.

Well Greg, In thought you were going to drop the subject of
Weather. Forest fires are one cause of bad weather, in fact the
main cause. Forest fires cause harmful 'particulants' and smog
to circulate in the atmosphere. That is why I included news of
forest fires under the Weather heading.
As I look out of the TV room window this early morning I can see
a quarter of the moon and some cumulus clouds, and there is
light. Things are getting back to normal for this time of the
year. And it is 5:36 am.
