Devastation
By: Gregory Date: February 8, 2023, 7:37 am
---------------------------------------------------------
We've seen scenes of whole buildings collapsing like houses of
cards in the earthquake in the Middle East with thousands of
people buried beneath them. We've also seen scenes, but over
many months now, of scenes of devastation of towns and cities in
Ukraine, the one caused by natural processes (clashing techtonic
plates) and the other by warfare, human failure to advance
beyond the primitive stages of evolution in terms of conflict,
rivalry, clanishness, tribalism and so on, despite advances in
other areas, in the end the law of the jungle.

True - but there's more human culpability in the earthquake
devastation than might at first appear. Hundreds of arrest
warrants have been issued against construction firms for
inadequate construction of supposedly quake-proof buildings in
Turkey, and the fact that Syria is divided between
government-held and rebel-held areas is hindering relief
efforts.

In that case, there's an evident conflation or crossover of
human and natural agency, but the stark fact of the blind
processes of nature being endlessly matched by humanity's
givenness to conflict ever since (although in a fictitious
context, a film, '2001') the higher primate progenitor of
humanity hurled that animal bone into the air and realised its
aggressive potential is writ large on the pages of our history.

Another type of devastation is that Microsoft and other tech
experts are deliberately changing things without permission for
the worse. I am fed up with their manipulations and that is one
thing that will go off the internet altogether.

Are you really, actually devasted by this? Sounds like
hyperbole.

The literal meaning of devastation is destruction of or damage
to physical objects or entities. Its only non-literal or
figurative use is to describe an extreme emotional state,
usually as a reaction to very bad news, as in Lyn's example. It
can, of course, be abused in this sense; eg."I was devastated
when they told me they would have to operate on my ingrowing
toenail." Hyperbole indeed...

it is devastating to me when you can't trust your computer to
give you what you want which is happening now. I expect "no
change" in procedures from Microsoft and yet they change
methodology every so often to make things "better" for you. They
cause confusion. Leave thev bl****y thing alone, we just got
used to the previous rules and regulations.

I too have microsoft and haven't noticed anything recently that
interferes with my use, certainly not that 'devastates' me.
This thread is surely about real devastations, not minor
irritations.
