I saw a bit of that on TV at work yesterday, but didn't know
what it was about. He's probably the same chap who lost his arms
as a teenager, as reported at the time.

It is tax time for me, on our personal taxes and the jobs I have
had done the past year at the cottage were many. I have had
dangerous trees cut down, spent weeks on plumbing, had the
property surveyed, the deck painted, and new stone steps put in
to the lake front. I have kept the local plumbers and others
busy much of the time. All this is deductible taxable expense ,
not capital Cost for tax purposes, as it was all from
replacement material and replaced something actually existing
and as being as close to being a carbon copy of the original as
is reasonable under the circumstances.

That is amazing. Thank God he is doing so well after suffering
such injuries.

That's great. I wonder if we can claim for similar here, I have
much work to be done on my house before selling. I'll look it
up but do have an accountant so could probably just ask him, he
should know.

I would think your tax system Lyn is similar to ours and the
American one. They may sound different, such as the Americans
use Chapter 11 to denote Bankruptcy, and Canadian bank dividends
are taxable. In the U.S.A.some dividends are considered Capital
gains.
There are many little differences, here and there, between the
two.
If you sold your house, the one you lived in, that would not be
subject to tax on profit.* Your accountant would fill you in on
details. In my case the cottage would be subject to income tax
on profit, as it is NOT my permanent residence.
I am not selling the cottage, my wife likes it.
*Assuming, that your tax system is the same as ours. Your
accountant would fill you in.

I have often wondered what Wokism was, so I listened to two
people arguing about it on stage via video today.
Putting it in my own words, as I don't think properly using
American language and revert to basic English when I can.
Wokism attributes everything that was done in the past to be
responsible for what happens today. You were for example guilty
as a white race of racism in the past , therefore you are guilty
of being a racist today. No change is possible. You are a
determined being with no possibility of change. No consideration
is made of the fact that you are an individual and a different
person from your ancestor, and are allowed to think differently.
You are not historically determined.
That's all I can think of so far,over morning coffee.

There is I think,between American English and British English a
separation that is ever growing farther and farther apart as
time progresses.
In America language is becoming a tower of Babel. Canadians are
also having problems with the English language too.
I have difficulty reading and understanding the National Post
daily newspaper, yet I have no difficulty understanding Pivot,
the magazine for CPAs,and CMAs.It is written in plain English. I
read that Trudeau has introduced a lot of amendments to the
Income Tax Act, making it very hard for people to keep up to
date. That does not surprise me.*
* I didn't get that from Pivot.but probably from the National
Post.
I long for the days when computers were much simpler to work
with, as It is becoming so complicated to get anything done
these days. It is like being in a Boeing advanced plane that was
so complicated that it crashed because the pilots couldn't
discontinue the computer systems and fly it manually to avoid a
crash.
I want to join the Luddites.

I too have been trying to understand how ultra conservatives see
"woke," as the Oxford dictionary definition obviously does not
reflect this. My youngest son explained to me what his peer
group sees as the negative side of "woke." (To them there is a
negative and positive side to this, which I found interesting.)
He showed me a video clip from a very strange Adult Swim cartoon
series called "The Shivering Truth." In this clip, the guy with
the bun in his hair criticizes everything as not good enough:

I do see this, and would absolutely agree that this would be
unfair and an exercise in futility with regards to true, endemic
racism--which absolutely exists still today. Yes, there are the
few who publish opinions about reparations for past institutions
like slavery or Jim Crow Laws, but the vast majority are
concerned with correcting racism that exists right now. The
debate should focus on exactly what endemic racism right now is,
how it effects minorities, and most importantly solutions on how
to minimize how racism now puts certain minorities at a
disadvantage.

My husband and I went to the dentist this morning for our
checkups, we are all good until our next one in six months time,
which is pleasing. :)
