Have you any idea of the prices for an average litre (or
half-litre) bottle of those brands in supermarkets there? The
one I cited (Borges Extra Virgin) is around 4.50 euros for a
litre bottle, as I said, which is just under 4 pounds. Bear in
mind that the virgin type is the best quality oil.

That is certainly pretty cheap by UK standards. It's about twice
that here, this being typical:

After my last post I went into the kitchen and had a look at
what I had and it was Napolina extra virgin. I need to put
another bottle on my grocery order as it is getting low. I've
no idea of the cost. Steve has posted an Ocado link which will
tell us that.
I looked at the link, Steve, thanks. Not a bad price at all, I
think.

Just got back from Aldi. Their own-brand EVOO is only £4.50 per
litre. but Aldi are dirt-cheap across the board.

I hope we're talking about the same quantities. The one in
Steve's last-but-one post is three quarters of a litre, so a
litre of that would cost nearer to 10 pounds (= over 11 euros.)
Here, it's all in litres. Also, I've checked Napolina on Amazon
and a half-litre bottle costs 7 pounds (so, 14 pounds a litre
bottle, about 16 euros.) Not exorbitant prices but probably not
for everyday use over there (eg. cooking and salads.) Naturally,
Spain as one of the three main olive oil producing countries
with Italy and Greece has cheaper prices for a home-grown
product.
On Steve's last post, dirt cheap is true but given the quantity
(a litre) I doubt the quality.

I agree with Greg. The cheaper the price, at least over here,
the lower the quality and in many cases the unlikelihood that it
is 100% olive oil.
Amazon is always higher in prices for these things, but the
Ligurian olive oil I bought a few months back was $30.00 for 17
oz. It was imported from Italy. The problem here is one can't
get anything but the common brands at the grocery.
As you see, the one I posted yesterday is about the same price
per oz. (That one interests me because it touts the same
qualities as the Ligurian EVO (low acidity and high in
polyphenols.)

We're experiencing severe drought here in Catalonia (see the
link) and most of Spain while there are severe water shortages
in much of the world, too. We may have to have restrictions on
domestic use this summer, not a pleasant prospect. (Perhaps the
local government should hire some rain dancers...)

Below 10%? Yikes :o California is experiencing a similar
situation where the government is having to redistribute water
resources. There, locals are likely to lose out to the corporate
farmers who require excessive amounts. Almonds in particular are
a concern and huge business there. I often think how awful it
will be to be a mere resident there.

Stock up on bottled water while it is still affordable and fill
empty bottles and containers while you can.
We only ever have very short droughts :-) and are then told not
to water the garden. There have been a few times over the years
when I've got up to find no water coming out of the tap; that's
usually because of a burst water main and is soon over but it is
damned inconvenient. I cannot imagine being without running
water for any length of time, it must be terrifying. I always
fill my kettle before going to bed, just in case.
