The Mediterranean diet may help to keep plaque at bay, but I
spent the first thirty-two years of my life in England without
it and the average English diet is probably a hygienist's
nightmare. I just have strong teeth and gums, I suppose.
(Perhaps my mother's milk was rich in calcium :) )

Genetics helps. Some teeth have more enamel than others, my
dentist once told me. That explains the candy eaters in my
family who have very few cavities. :D

Well, it was back then, but I think we've improved in recent
       decades.

Yes we have. Dental health is also a matter of genetics. My
husband didn't go to the dentist from when he was a child until
in his forties, when he had toothache and had to go. Other than
that tooth, he had no problems at all with his teeth. Both his
parents had all their own teeth when they died, as did his
grandmother. I, on the other hand, have always had problems
with my teeth despite doing my best to take care of them. I am
just grateful to still have most of them!

It would be interesting to know if that has had a knock on
effect of any kind on the population's individual dental
condition and/or eating habits. Statistics for dental treatment
since the NHS began in 1948 might throw light on that. Also, it
must be difficult to measure the degree of improvement in food
and eating habits. I imagine many people, especially working
people and OAP's, resort more to convenience and fast food
rather than pore over a hot stove or eat lots of fresh fruit and
       vegetables.
Another staple of the Mediterranean diet is olive oil, not only
for cooking but on salads, fresh ingredients being plentiful
here, and also bread. With every breakfast and evening meal we
have slices of bread smeared with fresh tomato and with drizzled
       olive oil.

Sounds lovely. I like that, also like olives (I buy them in
jars), on bread, slightly salted and drizzled with olive oil.

It's difficult to find pure extra-virgin olive oil here. The big
companies are blending in other vegetable oils and even
coloring. My latest purchase was an import from Liguria, Italy.
But, my favorite is an herb blend I make that has a little bit
of lemon juice (to moisten the herbs) in olive oil for dipping.
       Heaven.
Greg, what's your favorite olive oil from Spain?

There are so many good quality virgin olive oils available here,
Bev, that I'd find it hard to name a favourite. Still, our
regular brand is from here in Catalonia, Borges virgin olive
oil. It has a high rating amongst oils and at around 4.50 euros
(about 5 dollars) a litre bottle, good value.

Couldn't find this on Amazon. Might try this one though:

You can buy extra virgin olive oil here in the UK quite easily
in supermarkets. There are many brands, eg: Bertolli, Filipo,
Picualia Organic, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Greek
       Kalamata.
