Lyn, both my husband and I feel the same about that actor.

Well basing your view of her on the strength of the only two
examples of her performing skills you've seen, both being in any
case when she was already old and playing unsympathetic
characters, is a bit limited, not to say unfair, to say the
least. As Lyn pointed out and I seconded, she was a brilliant
actress in a variety of roles in a career of decades.

We saw some footage on the early morning news of Maggie Smith as
her character in dramas in which she had taken part in her
younger days, we would not have described her as a brilliant
actress. But you are entitled to your opinion just as my husband
and I are entitled to ours.

Please tell me what is your criterion for and your definitive
assessment of what constitutes a brilliant actress. One might
dislike her characterisations in some gut sense but her
capabilities as an accomplished actress are beyond doubt. As for
your concluding sentence, it's not a question of my opinion or
yours but that of the whole theatrical and acting establishment
which has unanimously acknowledged and praised her acting
       talent.

We are obviously all wrong, Gregory :-).
Maggie Smith could never have lived up to Piers Brosnan.

[/quote]Of course you are, but it would be nice if you could
give reasons for your opinion: dd you think, for example, that
she had a limited range? Some actors have essentially only one
character, that they repeat over and over again, but I don't
think that applied to Dame Maggie.

I doubt Roses will come back with an answer, she probably
doesn't know, it's just a feeling. Or Dame Maggie struck a
chord somewhere, reminding her of somebody. Let's just accept,
       different strokes for different folks.
My feelings/instincts about three people I've only seen on TV
are similar, there's something about them that makes me feel
uneasy. Two are dead now, the other very much alive and
       thriving.
There's nowt as queer as folk.
I too thought Maggie Smith was an accomplished and versatile
actress and enjoyed her performances very much.

The characters she played were not particularly pleasant, and
from what I gather from Miriam Margoles description of her, in
real life Maggie Smith's own personality was similar in some
       ways.

For the record this is what Miriam Margoyles said about Dame
       Maggie Smith, from the BBC:
Margolyes, who also shared the screen with Dame Maggie in Ladies
in Lavender, said the actress always had a "glint of mischief".
"I saw what a kind person she could be as well as absolutely
terrifying," she said. "I wouldn't say I was a friend of hers, I
was an acolyte, and she allowed me to be so."

I can understand Blueroses’ response to Maggie Smith. Honestly,
I wasn’t a fan of hers until I saw Ladies in Lavender, but
especially after The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Oh, my…I loved
her in that film. So, when she played the Dowager Countess Lady
Grantham in Downton, I truly became a fan girl.
Funny that after that, I began to love her other roles that had
not impressed me too much before. :D

Oh yes, she was marvellous in Downton.
Bev, I asked this earlier but perhaps you didn't notice. As you
enjoyed Downton so much, have you watched, 'The Gilded Age'? I
       did and enjoyed it.
