I don't think it is that worrying. When I was growing up a lot
of parents didn't bother about having childrens' eyes tested (&
other things), unless it appeared to be a serious sight issue.
I was short sighted, couldn't see what was on the blackboard
unless I was sitting at the front. It wasn't until I was 12, in
my first year at 'big' school, that my short sightedness was
detected at a school medical. I went to an optician and was
prescribed glasses. My mother was not pleased, I have no idea
why, it hardly affected her and when I had specs, much improved
for me. I could see bus numbers from a distance and suchlike,
never could before. Leaves on tall and distant trees were a
revelation.
That was not an unusual scenario, I've heard the same from
others of my age.
My eyes are OK now, better than ever for distance but I need
readers for very small print, otherwise I can read fine.
Children who are prescribed glasses don't always need them for
life.
What definitely is different now is that more checks take place
which can only be a good thing.

I agree with Lyn that it is not worrying in the terms she
expresses, but in another personal sense as well. I mean it
doesn't worry me in the slightest although I'm sorry for those
who experience this, or indeed any other physical defect. I
think far more worrying in a societal sense is young people's
addiction (not too strong a word, I feel) to mobile phones, a
growing problem which is increasingly engaging the attention of
various sectors of the medical profession, notably
psychologists. When many youngsters get serious withdrawal
symptoms when denied access to their new toys, there's something
seriously amiss in our society. For me, the sight of buses and
metro trains full of young folk glued to their mobiles,
forefingers punching buttons, is highly disquieting. Moreover, I
doubt whether they're checking out the latest developments in
nuclear physics...

There is a tendency to overshare useless information and send
pictures, eg about and of what you have just had to eat. I just
don't get it
I would, however, feel bereft without the internet, no doubt
about that and I have been without it recently for shortish
periods. It was such a relief to have it restored each time.
