HMRC letters saying you owe them money

Have any of you received letters purporting to come from HMRC
saying you owe them money? My husband received one today, which
seemed a bit dodgy. I heard on the Morning Live programme that
some of them could be a scam.

I seem to remember I had an email saying that and I didn't owe
       them.
Just check on their website, or write to them and ask. It's
always worth double checking anything and a lot can be given
       away by their email address.

Thanks Lyn, our eldest daughter, who does all her father's tax
affair, is going to sort it out for him, thank goodness.

Please don't worry about it, Roses, these things happen all the
       time.

The letter is genuine according to our daughter.

I would phone the HMRC and casually ask what is the statement of
my account, don't tell them you received a letter from them. Let
them tell you, they will if it is so.

I agree with Leslie, I don't know why you didn't just ring them,
Roses. Be prepared to hang on for ages and listen to music, I
was on the phone to them last week :-). You can also find out a
lot online if you log in to your account.
You are worrying about this too much. We all get letters from
the HMRC which are sometimes difficult to understand but, once
you get through, they are extremely helpful in explaining.

Our daughter is in charge of my husband's business affairs now
he has only half a working brain after his brain haemorrhage in
       2006, I wouldn't have a clue.

You don't need a clue to phone and those to whom you speak are
very pleasant and patient. I've no doubt this issue is
something simple and easily sorted out. HMRC also make
mistakes! I actually got a small tax rebate a few years ago
because of one. I couldn't work out why but didn't complain :).
However I don't blame you one bit for delegating; I delegate
some things, mainly because I can't be bothered with them and
tend to leave until the last minute.

I'd love to know how you are, Roses, and all your family.
