       Email requests from any Thaddean
By: Val Date: August 27, 2024, 3:59 am

       Morning all
A quick note to warn you all that if you receive a request (by
       email) for money from any Thaddean it most likely is a scam;
also pass thsi onto anyone in your address book
I received such an email last night
       So be very careful
       Regards
       Val

I haven't so far. I would ignore anyway, you have to know
       somebody to help them financially.
Quite interesting though, I wonder who is scamming? We'll
       probably never know.
There are plenty of scammers on facebook, some are quite funny.

I received one last night as well, I realised it was a scam and
       blocked it immediately.

Scary I just got one and replied. The person is pretending to be
Greg. Have I become more vulnerable because I replied? I really
thought it was Greg and felt concerned.

It’s ok Bev, so long as you don’t send money or give bank
       details x

Nothing like that has happened to me, however we do get phone
calls on the land line which are politively motivated. There is
one person who wants to inspect our water heater. He knows our
address and of course we won't let him in should he be daft
       enough to try.
I make a rude remark to the latter and hang up, to the former I
tell him "You are not Pro-life, Goodbye."

I too would respond if it was a name that I knew.
As gwinnie said, you'll be fine as long as you don't give the
person any bank details or money.
I'm feeling a bit left out, not having been targeted :-). I
have often been asked for money on facebook (so have many
others), and they are so obviously scamming, I'd be surprised if
       anyone took them seriously.

Mine was from someone called Greg too.
I knew it was a scam, having received a similar e-mail from an
acquaintance some years ago asking me to buy a gift card worth
£500 for his son as he wasn't well and couldn't get it himself.
I phoned him to check it out, and of course it was a scam as I
       suspected.

It all started the other day when Val alerted me by forum PM
that he'd received an email purportedly from me but clearly a
scam. Then, a couple of friends here in Barcelona phoned me to
say that they'd received similar emails, but hadn't acted on
them before contacting me first. As Val said, I'd been hacked
(no idea how; never had this problem in 24 years of
'Interneting'.) One of the two false emails being sent
supposedly from me (even down to my familiar name, Greg) asks
for money for a birthday present for "my" neice but "I" couldn't
ask by phone because of a 'sore throat'. They must have scanned
my Inbox and/or Deleted items for email addresses, or perhaps my
list of contacts. Heaven forbid that some of those have coughed
up the money thinking the emails were genuine. Hopefully, they
would contact me first, as my local friends did.
Anyway, I think the danger has passed now, at least for members
here who have been rightly suspicious and not fallen for the
scam. Bad enough to be asked for a limited amount of money, but
I hope nobody has ever put their bank details in an email, as I
       have never done.
This has produced a disagreeable feeling in me akin to that when
you discover that your home has been burgled, as happened to me
many years ago when I was still living in England. You somehow
feel besmirched with your privacy so rudely invaded by anonymous
       thieves.
PS. If anyone hasn't received one of the phoney emails, like
Lyn, it's probably because I don't have their email address. I'm
       fairly sure I don't have Lyn's.

I can understand how you feel, Greg, my email account was hacked
some years ago and all sorts of people received the most
peculiar emails from 'me'. It passed. My FB account has also
been hacked, I've tightened that up since.
Asking for money for a niece's birthday would, I think, be a
dead giveaway :-). I doubt anyone would really do that and, in
any case, without you ever going into specifics about finances
(thank goodness!), we know you wouldn't ask for money, you are
       OK.
(Sorry about your sore throat though :-)).
