Shostakovich

He's one of my favourite Russian and twentieth century
composers. I'm currently reading a new book by M.T. Anderson
called 'Symphony For The City Of The Dead' which is centred on
the German siege of Leningrad between 1941 and 1944, the
composer's home city, when hundreds of thousands of people
starved to death and survivors often resorted to cannibalism
with corpses of the dead in the streets. Shostakovich composed
his Seventh Symphony, 'Leningrad', during the siege and it was
performed there under the most rigorous conditions in August
1942, the symphony being the centrepiece of the book.
Shostakovich had many run ins with Stalin and feared for his
life during the Great Purge of 1937/38. He outlived the
dictator, though, dying in 1975.
