I can't quite see the point of this new thread. Is Tommy
Robinson really likely to sing the praises of this man? Almost
certainly not, but hardly an earth-shattering or out of the blue
conclusion. I mean, hard-line bigots like him tend not to be
very flexible in their thinking (sic) or see the good in some of
those they hate and malign, and they thrive on hatred. No
surprises there, so what more is there to say?

I agree, not with your first sentence; its is 'chat' and this is
a perfectly legitimate thread, but the rest. I hope the press
don't made a big thing out of the guy being a Muslim. It would
be better to just say "...name...", did such and such, thereby
setting an example to people not to make a feature out of
another person's race or colour, as if that is all that anyone
notices.
What I didn't notice first off was that Steve had posted a link!
I had a look and am pleased the Beeb just said the man's name,
Abdullah, and another man who got involved was called 'Desmond'.

While someone’s background shouldn’t matter, this is a powder
keg time, where the far right are poised to attack mosques,law
centres and hijabis, even where their ‘catalyst’ does not
involve Muslims or people without immigration status. I actually
think it is very important that this brave young man’s actions
are lauded. He could have been injured himself, as has happened
in other stabbing incidents.

Nobody thinks he shouldn't be praised, gwinnie, he's a star!
There are many news reports about this incident. Here are two
(one of which doesn't even mention Abdullah by name, taking
understatement to a new level! They all say this is not terror
related, I must admit it never occurred to me it was.

If it is then there is a Chat thread for these varied sorts of
stories (like postal scams) which make a single point and may
have a short duration. After all, Steve's original focus was
just on whether Tommy Robinson would have praised this man and I
responded to that issue directly. That it has expanded
tangentially (fair enough) is another matter, which I wasn't
expecting when I wrote that first sentence. Alright?

It came across as a bit of a put down, Greg. Steve doesn't often
start threads and s a this a good one - marvellous in comparison
to some of the banal stuff often posted but, hey-ho, it's
'chat'.

I really don't see what I said as a put down, Lyn, and I've
given good reason why I thought the thread pointless when it
seemed more appropriate on the Chat thread. And again, there
appeared to be little point in starting a new thread over a
single, short-life issue (ie. the reaction of a racist bigot.)
In any event, I doubt whether Steve will be unduly upset by my
hardly inflammatory observation. I'm sure he's seen much worse
and run the proverbial water off the duck's back in response...

A person's race, or religion has no relevance whatsoever,
especially if they do something very brave to save the lives of
others.

More details have emerged. The 11-year-old girl who was attacked
was apparently a tourist (unknown nationality for now)
accompanied by her mother. The assailant is Rumanian, but
speaking no English (his remarks had to be translated.)
According to a report, the defendant approached the girl and
placed her into a headlock. He then stabbed her eight times to
the body, where she sustained wounds to the face, shoulder,
wrist and neck area. She will need plastic surgery for the
wounds. This seems so horribly senseless and motiveless, unless
the assailant was some kind of psychopath. Poor girl, now marked
for life.
