       History repeats itself

Well, in different ways perhaps. Who would have thought that a
historically insignificant town in the Balkans, Sarajevo, would
have a double place in twentieth century history, first with the
assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in July 1914, the
spark which ignited the First World War, and the siege of the
city by Serbian forces in the Bosnian War of the 1990's, which
       lasted almost four years?
The latest development in the Ukraine/Russia War has Ukrainian
troops invading Russian territory for the first time in the
Kursk region of Russia, the site of the greatest tank battle in
history between the Red Army and retreating German forces in the
summer of 1943. Now, the region is seeing armed conflict again
over eighty years later. Here's a photo from newspapers the
other day (with the sign in Russian) and by coincidence a tank
being transported into the current conflict:

Let's hope the Ukrainian forces prevail, giving a severe blow to
       Putin's nefarious schemes.

Ukrainian troops are advancing further into Russia in Kursk
province and in neighbouring Belgorad, increasing Putin's
humiliation. There was a photo in the press yesterday of a wagon
load of Russian prisoners-of-war, most of them seeming to be
middle-aged, indicating the attrition in the younger ranks. It's
estimated that around half a million Russian troops have been
killed or injured in the fighting so far. Of course, the Russian
population is huge, but new called-up troops would be raw and
without combat experience, more cannon fodder for Putin.

forget their history are destined to repeat it."

I've read that Ukrainian president Zelensky is fond of symbolism
in events and seemingly he decided to launch the invasion of the
Russian region of Kursk on August 12th as this was the day in
2000 when the Russian submarine named 'Kursk' after the Soviet
       victory in 1943 sank.
