Two headlines from today's Telegraph:
1. "Counter-protesters should stay home to reduce strain on
police", says minister.
Is that really wise? I mean, isn't it going to encourage the
racist protesters to come out in force again? Looks like a case
of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I think the worry is that things may turn violent, in which case
it would need army intervention… to be honest, I find any large
gathering a bit unsafe. I attended Notting Hill Carnival once,
and was put off big events because our little group of 6 got
split as it is so easy to lose sight of each other, and we had a
scary moment when one street we were in got so tightly packed,
there was no quick way out. It showed me how easily even a tall
adult could lose their footing and get trampled.
2. "Jailed far-Right rioters could be released early."
The explanation given is the problem of overcrowding, but
releasing these thugs onto the street again hardly seems like a
valid solution. If there are too many in prison, let them suffer
for a while; they deserve it. Again, damned if you do...
One would hope that if they are released early, it would be with
ankle tags and the requirement to report to probation services
on a regular basis.

Greg ✅. gwinnie ✅
I am going to google to find out which minister said
counter-protests would put strain on the police.

Apparently it was Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Paymaster General.

He is one who has passed me by, I've heard his name btut not
taken much notice of him.
I googled him, genial looking chap, but couldn't find anything
about him saying that, or anything very recent at all. He might
have said something on X but I don't go there. It looks as
though everybody else does, Musk has been goading again:

I googled the phrase I quoted from The Telegraph itself after
reading it and got this:
Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Paymaster General, was asked by Sky
News about Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, urging Labour MPs
not to promote counter-demonstrations.“I think when people
actually went out to peacefully protest in line with the law,
they are doing so in line with a fine British tradition. But I
think what the Home Secretary said is entirely right, and I
would echo it having spoken to police officers yesterday about
the strain that they are under, the hours that they are working.
I certainly don’t think it helps for politicians to be
encouraging even more people out on our streets..."
The Paymaster General isn't a very well-known or glamorous post
(they don't turn up in films or TV series played by famous
actors), but the office-holder is in the Cabinet.

Oh I get it, it was actually Yvette Cooper who talked about the
strain on police. I daresay they do feel the strain but it is
their job, they are trained in riot control and it doesn't
happen all the time.
I like Yvette Cooper, for some reason my late husband used to
think she was a .... not o likeable person. I could never work
out why. Her husband, Ed Balls, is great too (what a pair).
Apparently she was interviwed by her husband on GMTV this week,
I don't know exactly what she said but it appears to have been
controversial. I will search a bit further. Later: She used a
four letter word beginning with S and ending with T. Bollocks.

Nice to have a quiet, steady paymaster and Nick looks good. I
wonder if he'd bung me a few grand on the quiet ? ;-)

No, it wasn't. If you read the part of my last post which was
quoted from The Telegraph, it was Nick Thomas-Symonds who talked
about the strain on the police, not Yvette Cooper. Let's give
Nick some credit. Why, he might even bung you a grand, or
perhaps the other kind of credit...
