Less rioting last night, I would like to believe they are dying
down.
Somebody posted an example of how such disturbances were cooled
in Churchill's time, another where the army was brought in with
the threat of gunfire; they were not riots with gangs going to
from town to town, torching buildings, they were strikes from
workers with legitimate complaints.
Elon Musk is stirring things up big time.

On your first comment, I'd hope so but
"Earlier in the week, Sir Keir announced a “standing army” of
6,000 specialist police officers to quell the ongoing violence
after eight days of unrest – and amid fears of more on
Wednesday."
On your second, I hadn't known about that. It clearly can't have
been during the war, more likely during Churchill's time as PM
in the early 1950's. He was no hero of the workers, for sure.

I can't remember now but I assumed it was while Churchill was
PM.
'Dying down' doesn't mean 'stopped', it was just quieter last
night, today may bring further trouble. We all hope not.

Yes, Lyn, I know 'dying down' doesn't mean 'stopped', which I
didn't think was implied. As for today, the facts may outweigh
hope. From a newspaper report this morning:
"Police are braced for riots in at least 30 locations today
after more than a week of violence across the UK.
Officers said intelligence sources had identified dozens of
hotspots where trouble could flare, with threats against
immigration centres being monitored. A list of legal firms and
advice agencies have been shared online among far-Right groups
as possible targets, with the message telling people to “mask
up” if they attend. More than 6,000 specialist riot police are
on standby to deal with any outbreaks of violence."

God help us, it is so very frightening. I am not personally
affected, where I live is not the sort of area where anyone
would riot, being mainly residential with plenty of shops, cafes
and restaurants in the high street (which is quite narrow), but
not a big place. I am thankful for that (even if it is a bit of
a boring area). However, in the London region you are never very
far from somewhere that it could happen.

The tendency of people to say The Far Right, yobs and other
names, plus social media are to blame as the causes of the riots
confuses me. I like to define my terms, before I start name
calling. There is also a large element of hooliganism among the
protesters - who don't know the meaning of Right Wing or Left
Wing. They riot because they can get away with it, and have no
moral conscience.

They're labelled far-right because they are ultra-nationalistic,
white supremacist, xenophobic and use violence, like Oswald
Mosley's fascist thugs of the '30's. Many of them have swastikas
tattooed on their arms, too. As for the social media, they're
not accused of being the primary cause of the riots but of their
rapid spread due to instant widespread communication.
Hooliganism is just their modus vivendi but their core ideas are
fundamentally fascistic. That they are too cretinously
unintelligent not to know the meaning of right wing is
irrelevant (or the better term, far right.) Everything about
them indicates that is exactly what they are. (I like to define
my terms...)
