There is talk of a crack down on social media sites to try to
prevent encouraging these far right evil thugs to riot.

I have to insist, Lyn, that tear gas and rubber bullets do not
maim. That is their objective, to halt the violence by effective
but non-fatal and non-seriously injurious means. The only
stronger measure would be real bullets, but that's clearly
unacceptable. As for riot squad police, they're formed from
regular police but wearing special protective clothing often
incorporating a kind of body armour, wearing helmets and
carrying shields and batons. This enables them to wade into
violent mobs without fear of injury. They should be being
employed now in my view.
Whoever suggested water cannons was presumably unaware of the
following information:
"Only six water cannons are operational in the United Kingdom,
all held by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Water cannon
use outside Northern Ireland is not approved, and would require
the statutory authorisation from the Home Secretary for use in
England and Wales."

Steve read that they did. I only know what I read :-). I googled
and it's all over the place that they can maim, even kill. I
won't post a link because there are so many to choose from and
anyway, people can google for themselves. However, I copied
this from one:

I know the current rioters are not peaceful but even so they
should not be maimed, let alone killed.

The rioters are all over social media reels. The police will
find them and justice will be served. Back in 2011,
rioters/looters received lengthy sentences.

They accuse immigrants, and particularly Muslims whether
immigrant or not, of all sorts and then go out en masse and do
worse. Can they not see that?

Where does he say that? His only post here is about some
suggesting the use of water cannons.
On rubber bullets, let's just say that their primary objective
is not to maim but to deter if guns are aimed correctly. If
police in some countries (probably many undemocratic ones with
brutal police) have just shot to injure or maim, there's no
reason why English police should do the same if given correct
instructions. In any event, an alternative strategy would be to
fire some in the air first as a warning and if the mob doesn't
disperse at that, let them take the consequences, whatever they
may be. (And when faced with savage violence, you don't
pussyfoot around.)
I've seen on news reports from the UK today police in the riot
squad gear I described going into action, so it's good to see
that measure being employed now. Of course, they're wielding
batons which will probably be used to break a few heads. Fair
enough - sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.
Added: In your quoted extract, the victims are peaceful
protesters, so the use of rubber bullets is unjustified.
Ultra-violent protesters, on the other hand, deserve rough
treatment and whatever injuries they may sustain.

The point I was making is that few will escape justice as they
have made themselves identifiable. I was horrified about the
hotels being torched and shocked to see objects hurled at
police.

Greg, I can't find the post now, it must have been removed. I
don't know about water cannons, was thinking of hoses but that
probably isn't feasible. I know the rioters need to be subdued
with some force. In some other countries the police would be
armed.
gwinnie, I get your point. I too found the fire bombing of the
police station and the threats to those in the hotel quite
alarming. The police managed to stop them from going into the
hotel, thankfully, but it was very difficult, quite a skirmish.
It's a good thing that so many will be identified and probably
end up in gaol, however they'll be spreading their propaganda
and recruiting inside.

Water cannons are very dangerous, there’s a reason Boris wasn’t
allowed to use them.

Ah, I was told it was a hotel that was torched, thank you for
the info.

A police station was torched, gwinnie, and the rioters tried to
do the same to the hotel but the police managed to restrain them
so you're not far wrong (which does not mean you are far right
;-)). I saw it all on the television news after it happened.
