Yes it is bad at the moment, all over the media. I don't know
what the rioters hope to achieve. As always with riots, shops
are looted. Some of them brandish flags, or wear them,
shouting, 'sink/send back the boats', and that sort of thing.
They are the unpleasant people on facebook, spreading their
propaganda. I'm not likely to run into any of them in person,
thankfully (though you never know).

Nothing, other than chaos in the streets. As they're almost
wholly all semi-literate (if that), inarticulate thugs, thus
denied reasoned, intelligent expression, their only outlet is
nihilistic violence. Police reaction should be much stronger,
including the use of tear gas and rubber bullets, the only
effective methods to deal with riots when they get out of hand.

Firebombs were thrown at a police station during one of the
riots, and a car set on fire.

Latest news:
"Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters have attacked a hotel
in South Yorkshire that has been used to house migrants. Videos
posted on social media show the police retreating under a hail
of objects thrown by protesters outside the Holiday Inn Express
in Manvers, Rotherham."
As I said, the police should be employing much stronger
measures. They wouldn't be retreating if they fired tear gas and
rubber bullets into the mob.

Yes they should.
Here are two example copied from facebook, both from same poster
but there are many more:
"its because them born in the 40s have copped for this country
being over run by these people that havent a days work in there
bodys just come over here claim what they can straight to the
doctors and get on there panel all their medication free make
the streets look dirty & dont for get the pension ages went up
dont say that was the conservatives because there all tared with
the same brush .
"Yes they are all over (name of town) & they live around me on
the same street has me drinking smoking but not working i was
born in 1946".

The riots are continuing unabated and the response of the
authorities has been feeble so far. As I said earlier, the
police should be repelling these cretinous thugs with tear gas
and rubber bullets. Avuncular Dixon of Dock Green has long since
retired and it's time the plods stopped plodding.

Yes, I just read there was serious rioting in Liverpool,
Bristol, Manchester, Hull, Belfast, Stoke and other cities over
the weekend.
The police have done very well so far but it is now beyond them,
I agree harsher measures must be employed, not to kill or maim
any protestors but to deter them. They are going around
terrifying innocent people and it is time for them to be afraid.

True, but let's bear in mind that the only feasible harsher,
though non-fatal, measures are precisely tear gas and rubber
bullets, which in the case of tear gas goes beyond deterrence
per se (but that too) and is aimed at rendering rioters
incapable of further violent activity. Rubber bullets don't maim
but they hurt on impact and certainly deter further attacks, as
I witnessed here back in 1977 soon after I arrived in Barcelona
when a violent anti-government demonstration in the city centre
was broken up when police started firing rubber bullets. The
crowd dispersed within a couple of minutes.

I don't know what measures could be used if what has been
suggested does actually maim. Cold water hoses? Maybe shipping
extra riot squad police in from elsewhere or involving the army,
which would look quite menacing and might frighten the thugs.
