       What's happening?

Two children killed and six wounded in a stabbing attack in
       Southport.

What with knife attacks on the increase and more violence in
general (including a policeman stamping on someone's head in
Manchester airport) you can't help but wonder what's going on in
our society. When I was younger, there was violence of course
(teddy boys, mods and rockers, street gangs, etc.), but nothing
like what we are seeing today.

UK is turning into the US. Knife and gun crime rife now.

It is very tragic and terrible. :o The 17 year old lad who
carried out this stabbing will be another sick character to add
to all the others who have tainted the UK with their evil
       crimes.

Agreed, but difficult as it may be, I'm trying to get to the
bottom of this surge of violence in the UK in recent times, so
far beyond my younger days and even the 80's and 90's.
Sociologists and psychologists probably have their theories but
I'd like to know what people here think about it. (Not having
lived in the UK for over forty years I can't really offer a
       first-hand informed opinion.)

       I honestly don't know.

The Southport tragedy is just dreadful and the perpetrator was
only seventeen! A Cardiff-born boy, living in Lancs.
Horrendous. Here is the latest. I did read the one Greg posted
but this was only a few minutes ago:

I just don’t know. I know there are more weapons around due to
the rise of drug-dealing & organised crime. I assumed it was
linked to this. The riots are terrifying as well as they are a
threat to social order, law and justice.

As if those poor people in Southport haven't experienced one
terrible trauma, last night a riot took place, which injured 39
police officers and damaged a mosque! It appears these
anti-Muslim/anti-police evil protesters were looking for an
excuse to riot and do harm and damage. >:( The person who
committed the first terrible crime was not a Muslim! I hope
everyone who took place in that riot is arrested and faces the
       full force of the law!

On your first comment Gwinnie, I think it goes beyond the
availability of weapons and is more to do with a breakdown in
societal and social mores and inherent values along with the
rise of egoism and ultra-individualism with instant
gratification being the number one goal for increasingly many.
Violence is then just a means to an end, or various ends,
especially when "do what I will shall be the whole of the law"
       (Aleister Crowley).
Just a few thoughts, although I'm no sociologist or
psychologist. Still, we might invoke the title of one of Freud's
key works,'Civilisation and its Discontents' as a sign.
Riots? Civilised order has always been less than skin deep.

Living in London, I don’t think society has broken down or is at
risk of this. However, violence has risen to US-level and
US-style… I also do think there is a rise in young people
becoming disenfranchised and lured into Dickensian-style gangs,
organised by adults who know how to run a business and use this
knowledge for bad purposes, and set up drug-supply lines through
the country (aka County Lines). This is what has led to the
ready supply and ubiquity of drugs and weapons.
On top of this is mental health problems. Of course,
investigations are ongoing of the young man, and we know nothing
but I have seen some headlines about mental health. If someone
has psychosis they can lose touch with reality. It can be hard
to detect because the person thinks they inhabit the same
reality as the rest of us, with potentially terrible
consequences. I underline that not all people with psychosis
will carry out acts of violence.

This is the most recent report on the atrocity.
It is said the perpetrator was wearing a mask and arrived in a
taxi out of which he ran without paying the fare (I know there
are many stories circulating about this).
Some months after Sarah Everard's kidnap and murder, a young
woman, teacher, was walking home from a friend's house in the
evening in Woolwich. She was attacked and murdered. The
perpetrator was quickly found. He had deliberately travelled
from a different part of London to kill someone and that poor
girl was in his path. He was known to have severe mental health
problems - and we all know how sh*te the NHS mental health
services are. He is safely locked up in a secure unit.
The Southport attacks and murders reminded me of that. However
we'll have wait for more information about the killer.
It is just too awful and similar things happen all over the
       world.
