Things are really hotting up now with Israel (the IDF) and
Hezbollah exchanging fire, although little damage seems to have
been done to the former while Hezbollah has apparently suffered
the loss of hundreds of rocket launchers in IDF strikes. Limited
actions or prelude to a full scale war? The next few days will
       tell.

After a lull since the previous post, the situation has become
more serious again with thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies
in Lebanon having been accessed by Mossad (the Israeli
intelligence service) and exploded when triggered killing
several and injuring many, the targets being members of
Hizbollah. The Israeli defence minister has described this as a
new phase of the war, which now threatens to extend.

I thought we talked about that yesterday, it was all over the
news and the internet. I remember a fellow Thaddean saying that
pagers were used by staff where they worked years ago and how
inventive it was to adapt them as weapons, or something like
that. I can't see the post on this thread though.
I just looked online and found a Guardian article, which i will
post, explaining the technology behind the new weapons.
  HTML https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/18/hezbollah-pagers-what-do-we-know-about-how-the-attack-happened
It's terrifying. What will they think of next.
I despair, all the talks arranged by world leaders over many
       years, are ineffective.
Trump says he would "...get that settled and fast" :-), but not
how. Harris didn't say much except that it must end, for which
we all hope, but so far there is no end in sight.

Only the last two threads on Chat (Leslie and myself) but now it
has blown up (no pun intended) it really needs any continuation
       on this more appropriate thread.
"It's terrifying. What will they think of next?"
I'd say more a case of par for the course than terrifying, if
anything. Apparently, it was Plato who first said, "Necessity is
the mother of invention", but we might add 'war is also the
mother of invention', and when your very existence is
threatened, as is the case with Israel surrounded by hostile
powers bent on its destruction, above all Iran, you'll resort to
anything to defend your country and way of life. (To add, Israel
is the leading nation in advanced computer and AI technology.)
"I despair, all the talks arranged by world leaders over many

I don't. It's what happens all too often. That's history.
As for Trump, he generates enough hot air to fill an airborne
balloon. Harris says a lot of things but without any real
       substance.

We’ve learned from history that world leaders are ineffective
because the richest amongst us are the ones who drive
government, economic policies that make the winners richer and
       everyone else poorer.
It’s no surprise that Lebanon is suffering such civil unrest
right now after suffering such a terrible economic meltdown in
       the recent past.
History has also revealed that on the surface, religious wars
are often the facade behind which the elites hide to orchestrate
the true battle—which is a quest for even more control over
       resources/money.
When viewing any unrest in this world, I can’t help but feel
this is what is actually going on:

       Very good, Bev.
It's also true of here, especially at the moment with the hatred
of Keir Starmer which I honestly don't understand. I might
mention it on Chat and see what all the other UK residents
(Steve and gwinnie), think about him. I may be missing
       something.

That is not my reading of history Bev going over ages past.
Until the Middle of the 19th century, there were definitely wars
about religion. It was not as Karl Marx said in his Das Kapital.
People were greedy before Marx -but my point is people believed
in the supernatural then much more than they do today which
mitigated their natural greed (Since the Fall of Man...and all
       that...)

Even then, the battles seemed religious because the “elites”
throughout recorded history have aligned with rulers who are
easily accepted as “God’s right hand.” Any threat to them is a
threat against God. But, the end result is always more land,
       power, and resources.

Yes, everyone is greedy to some extent. It’s part of survival
and very much human nature (the Fall of Man as you said.) But,
the greedy that have power over others, under the guise of holy
righteousness, is the evil behind supposed religious wars.
The greedy behind religious wars learned early on that by
aligning leaders with God/gods, the masses will fight to the
death believing the battle is a religious one. It works just as
powerfully in today’s politics as it did in all of recorded
       history.
