Dementia

Dementia is a hot topic at present. Many people are concerned
that Joe Biden could be in the early stages of it.
When my husband's sister-in-law, who had dementia, died this
year, we donated a reasonable sum of money to the Alzheimer's
Society to help with their research. His brother had dementia,
as did his mother.
Today a letter arrived from the Alzheimer's Society asking for
more money and trying to make us feel guilty if we didn't
comply!! I gather that other people who have donated money felt
the same as we do, very annoyed and ignored the letter!
My husband a I have made donations to many charities over the
years. Often we have donated, quite a large sums of money.
However, this the first time we have ever received this sort of
letter from a charity to which have given money!

Perhaps there’s some desperation there as likely they have seen
a drop in donations since the cost of living started to bite.

I know someone who died of it last year, about six years younger
than me. She had been ill for a few years, latterly in a
nursing home. I donated in her memory but haven't had any
letters. I've had the odd email. When you donate to a charity
you tick a box to show you are happy to be contacted, by phone,
email or text. I ticked email.
Just because you are contacted, you don't have to give. We
cannot give to all charities all the time and they know that. I
doubt they were trying to make you feel guilty, Roses. You can
send them an email asking them not to write to you any more or
else just bin any future letters without reading.

A strange coincidence but I have had a letter forwarded to my
new address from the Alzheimer's Charity, asking for a donation
towards their research. I did not feel they were trying to make
me, or anyone else, guilty if they don't give. All charities
keep in touch and urge people to donate again once they have
donated. We don't have to.

I didn't tick the box saying I wished to hear from them again.
It was a one off donation, which we gave to the charity and we
made that quite clear. The very long letter we received banged
on and on about us giving a £50 monthly donation. Anyway they
will never get another donation from us, end of story.

It sounds like the same letter I received, Roses. It didn't
affect me as it did you :-), I just tore it up but I might give
in the future. Charities do this (send pleading letters), all
the time, sometimes they even phone you! I don't give out my
phone number to them any more. I give to charities on an ad hoc
basis, stopped direct debits a while back.
