Re: American Elections

She now has the backing of most of the major Democrat figures,
including various would-be contenders for the nomination, like
California governor Gavin Newsom, who have backed out of the
race. As some commentators have pointed out, though, Barack
Obama has remained silent on the issue so far and perhaps the
card up his sleeve is a possible declaration of Michelle's
putting her name forward for the nomination.
All are agreed that she is the only figure with any certainty of
defeating Trump in November with a ten per cent lead over him in
polls. (Harris stays around ten per cent behind him.) Again,
though, as has been discussed here, she has repeatedly said that
she has no interest in entering the race and once declared,
“Politics is hard. You’ve got to want it. It’s got to be in your
soul, because it is so important. It is not in my soul.” Well,
people can change their minds, unlikely as it may seem in her
case. Still, let's see how it goes...

I perked up at the very slight hint Michelle may run. However, I
do like Kamala, and think it’s to her credit how she keeps
saying that politics is not in her soul. She may be that leader
that has “greatness thrust upon” her.

You seem to have got confused, Gwinnie. It was Michelle who said
politics wasn't in her soul (etc.) not Kamala Harris.

Here is a recent article about Michelle Obama's attitude to
politics:

I see how that happened. Harris name was the only name in that
paragraph. This forum is difficult to read on a small screen, as
you end up having to do a lot of scrolling and can lose track of
the narrative.

I don't. It should have been clear on a normal reading that I
was talking about Michelle Obama, not Kamala Harris, not least
as I said, "All are agreed that she is the only figure with any
certainty of defeating Trump in November with a ten per cent
lead over him in polls. (Harris stays around ten per cent behind
him.)" That makes it logically evident that I was referring to
Michelle in contrast with Harris, whom I said lags ten per cent
behind Trump in the polls.
I'd say the letters are clear enough on a normal computer screen
and, moreover, I split the post into two paragraphs to avoid
word congestion.
As for this:
"This forum is difficult to read on a small screen, as you end
up having to do a lot of scrolling and can lose track of the
narrative."
Oh, come on Gwinnie- we're just talking about a couple of
consecutive posts, not a whole bundle of them.

Oh for goodness sake, let it go, gwinnie isn't lying. I read
back and it was confusing until I read the second sentence
(Harris behind). As for small screens, gwinnie is probably
using her phone which is sometimes difficult to read. I use a
laptop and it's fine, phone is for texts only.
I think it is very unlikely that Michelle O will run and Kamala
Harris is quite impressive from what I have read. Whether the
American voters agree or not remains to be seen.

I know Gwinnie wasn't lying, something I would never accuse her
of, just confused. You rightly spotted the real situation with
that highlighted sentence whereas Gwinnie didn't. So it goes. I
could add that the second paragraph began "She...", which
clearly referred to Michelle, continuing the exposition from the
first paragraph. Had it been about Harris, her name would have
begun the paragraph to make it clear. And, finally ;) , Harris
would never have said that politics wasn't in her soul. It's
been in her soul for decades, from when she was the California
attorney general through her bid for the presidential candidacy
nomination in 2020 (for which she gained only 3% support) to her
appointment as Biden's VP. She's a very ambitious lady in that
field.
Alright, I'll let it go there. It's just that I'm someone who's
a stickler for facts, for getting things right, perhaps
obsessively so. My problem. As the Animals' song says, Please
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.
I agree that it's highly unlikely Michelle will enter the race,
but until we hear from Barack, it's still somewhat uncertain.
