Thanks Lyn. Val predicted the weather as 17c if we are lucky. It
is going to warm up on the day we leave! ;D
There is a message there somewhere from the tourism board!

You'll have a great time and won't need sun screen.

Roses, your story reminded me that I saw Ringo and his
girlfriend or wife at the Orlando International Airport in
around 1996. I remember being surprised at how small he was.
They passed by us on their way out of the airport, and as I
remember there seemed to be no fans around.
I was never a Beatles fan, but I remember vividly seeing them
debut on the Ed Sullivan Show during their first tour of America
and my father making fun of their hair. :D

Yes, their hairstyle was something completely new at that time
when most teenage boys and young men had their hair combed back
with a quiff at the front. They also wore suits with the famous
collarless 'Beatles jacket' in their first years of fame,
wearing a suit being unheard of amongst young men back then.

I don’t think they’ve stood the test of time. Other views are

I have to disagree. They revolutionised pop music as the first
group which sang and played their own instruments, as well as
spearheading the popularity of British pop music in America and
elsewhere. Moreover, Lennon and McCartney wrote all their own
songs, many of which are inventive lyricswise and tuneful and
have certainly stood the test of time, just as music from other
epochs have. For example, in a different genre, the great songs
of people like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Johnny Mercer and
others, sung by people like Frank Sinatra, have become timeless
standards and have certainly stood the test of time.

The music is good, and they were revolutionary (you say you want
a Revolution… :D ) alongside the Rolling Stones. However, I
don’t hear their songs played anymore and I wonder how many
young people today, who in the 60s would have been teenyboppers,
have even heard of them. It is not a criticism of the Beatles,
nor of today’s kids. Sic transit Gloria mundi.

Beatles and Stones are as popular as ever. Young people still
play them.

Well, I think it's unlikely that their songs would be played on
popular radio stations today, but everyone is familiar with
them, even those who've never heard their records (who today, we
oldies apart, has ever heard of Gerry & The Pacemakers, The
Searchers, The Merseybeats and other exponents of 'the Mersey
Sound'?) According to Wikipedia, they are the best-selling
musical act of all time with record sales of over 600 million.
I'm also fairly certain that most young people will at least
have heard of them. Indeed, their fame is international in
scope.
It's remarkable that The Rolling Stones are still performing and
undertaking international tours, not least given that Jagger and
Richards have now turned 80. I can clearly remember attending
the free concert they gave in Hyde Park in the summer of 1969.
Seems like back in the Stone(s) Age, now!
