I remember all that very well, there was still some snow lying
about in April 1963. Kids loved it, including me.
Cold and bright today. Quite a nice day for going out.

Blimey, they were brave.
It was -1degC here at 8am when I went out. I certainly noticed
it! Quite bright though.

It was like that here too yesterday.
The temperature has gone up a bit today, not much but enough to
make everything outside feel less cold. It is still dark (seems
like the middle of the night to me, I object to being awake this
early and I woke three quarters of an hour ago :-)), but is
apparently going to be cloudy today. We in the South East
shouldn't complain, other parts of the country are in for some
horrendous weather.

I'm watching a programme on ch5 called '1928: The Year the
Thames Flooded'. The footage and commentary are absolutely
terrifying, beyond imagination. Snow had fallen, froze then
melted into the Thames which burst its banks and tidal surges
devastated nearby dwellings where poor people were trapped in
flats and tenements - and died. It had a terrible effect on
areas near the Thames for a very long time afterwards and
riverside businesses were ruined. Dilute sewage was everywhere.
Parts of the old London were completely demolished. People who
survived the flood were never the same again. A similar
occurrence was in Germany when the Rhine flooded.
It has now moved on to the Thames Barrier, which I remember
being built in the 1980s. It took long enough to get round to
that and has not yet been put to the test, thankfully. It is
constantly monitored and will be updated if necessary but
goodness knows if it will work.

There was a review of that in The Telegraph. It mentioned that
the Tate Gallery was flooded and the Tower of London moat filled
with water.
This is a headline from today's Telegraph:
70,000 homes without power with trains and flights cancelled as
99mph winds batter Britain
You're getting some really bad storms in the UK lately which are
clearly making life very difficult for many people.

Yes we are. It was unbelievable last night, I could hear
banging and ringing from outside, back and front. However, I did
go to sleep and slept well. Early this morning I was relieved
that only my polystyrene milk minder had lost its lid :-), which
I retrieved from the front lawn.
The gale is building up again today but it isn't very cold,
surprisingly, at 9degC. Then it is going to taper off but will
rain heavily tomorrow (according to Met Office).

Latest storm news from The Telegraph:
"Britain is bracing for the tenth storm of the winter with 70mph
winds and heavy downpours. Storm Jocelyn is due to move in on
Tuesday and batter parts of the country that are still reeling
from Storm Isha’s trail of destruction, which saw gales of up to
99mph affect “everybody”, according to the Met Office."
Incidentally, I wonder who is responsible for naming these
storms. They do seem rather fanciful.

According to the Met, we can expect heavy rain in the London
area from mid-morning but escape weather warnings.
It's not so good in other areas.
