We've had very strong winds over the last few days, apparently
an outlying effect of Storm Ciaran. It has blown over trees and
caused traffic problems but nothing like the severe effects in
parts of northern Europe and the UK. Still very breezy this
morning with the sun out in a blue sky. Temperatures are well
down from the recent long, hot summer, around 12º overnight, 19º
at the moment and forecast for around 23º midday.

Early yesterday morning the temperature was 1deg C, it later
crept to 3. When I brought my milk in I nearly froze on the
doorstep. Apparently, there was some snow during the day but I
didn't see it and it obviously didn't settle.
This morning the temp is -1deg C; I have been out briefly at
the front and didn't find it particularly cold :-\ . Odd, I
surely haven't acclimatised so quickly.
Nice and warm indoors as always, I turned heating up yesterday
and feel cosy.

Wasn't the milk frozen? Today, too?
Different here. It's 12º at the moment and forecast to rise to
around 16º midday and sunny with blue skies. Until yesterday,
temperatures had been around 20º by midday.

Some light snow all day which did not settle. About -3 degrees
C.
We buy our milk in plastic or cardboard containers every few
days putting it in the refrigerator. No one buys milk in glass
bottles here :) or has it delivered- to my knowledge.

No, Greg, the milk wasn't frozen but there was ice on the bottle
so had I retrieved it later, it would have been. I have an
insulated milk container by the step but the lid was frozen to
the bottom so milkman put the milk next to it.
I don't have a delivery on a Saturday, the milkman only comes to
my area on Mondays, Wednesdays and Frdays.

Leslie, there is a move towards going back to glass milk and
juice bottles which can be rinsed and returned; the companies
who deliver offer that but you can order milk, 2 or four litres,
in plastic bottles. I don't know how successful the resurgence
of glass bottles is or if it will continue, I've had it for
several years.
If I run out and buy supermarket/shop milk it is in waxed
cartons or plastic bottles (filtered milk such as Cravendale is
good). They are recyclable.

We have to go get our milk, it isn't delivered .If you don't
have a car then you walk down the street turn right and walk 1km
up (hilly) Edenbridge Drive to Royal York Road, turn left and
walk about 1km (dodging traffic) to our nearest shopping
center and buy milk in plastic from Loblaws.
Or get a relative to do it for you!
Mrs Seebreeze (wrong spelling) well in her nineties now, two
house up, used to do that, I believe as her daughter lives in
the USA. Before that she had an old very noisy car and drove for
shopping. Come to think of it we haven't seen her lately, but
someone visits her house.
Everybody keeps to themselves on our street. I know only one man
(an old timer) who I spoke to months ago -he thinks the Russian
Mafia have taken over the street based on the fact of never
ending construction on our street. No one seems satisfied - they
want to build or renovate monster houses. I am happy with ours
but we need a new fridge which should have been here last month
and is delayed until Jan 5th 2024.

Everyone gets their milk in cities here* from food shops or,
more usually, supermarkets and in cartons (there's no bottled
milk.) As for deliveries, most supermarkets (like ours) deliver
ordered food to one's house and we get a number of cartons of
milk included for a fortnight or so (the beauty of fridges!) The
advantage of cartons is that the milk can last for weeks, unlike
fresh milk.
* It's undoubtedly different in country areas, but that is
dwindling with time and standardisation.

Yes, Cravendale (and other filtered milk, the Co-op do their
own), lasts much longer than ordinary bottles of glass or
plastic. It tastes nice too. I don't buy vast amounts of
bottled milk from the milkman though, being on my own I need
less than I used to. For example, yesterday I had only one pint
delivered because I had some in the fridge from a supermarket
delivery.
I order other things from the milkman, eg cream, cheese, yogurt,
bread, sometimes eggs and bacon, fruit. It's handy because I
can order up until 9pm the night before. I couldn't do a
supermarket order for just a couple of things but had a good
stock up from a supermarket delivery at the beginning of the
week. Some things are more expensive from the milkman but as I
don't buy from there all the time and it's only me, I don't
worry.
How long the milkman will keep calling, I know not, it is
probably dying out and I haven't yet enquired as to whether they
deliver to where I am soon moving. Actually, I might check on
that now so am prepared.
Back to weather, the temperature here (outside) has crept up to
1deg C. I briefly went out and it doesn't seem as cold as that.
Nice indoors, 23/4 deg C:-).

Dull, misty, very still, damn cold. Probably not quite freezing
at the moment (15:25), but near enough for last night's hard
frost to still be on the grass in the front garden.
I have, for the last year or so, been getting two pints of
full-cream milk (in old-fashioned glass bottles with foil tops -
quite nostalgic) and six eggs every Saturday from 'The Modern
Milkman', and when I'm on my own that's enough, because I only
use milk in tea and coffee.
