Whitsuntide And Christianity

Every year when I was a very little boy we were taken to the
bottom of the street, Syke Avenue ( grandad's street) and were
put on a horse and cart with other children. It was a clean cart
as we had on our new Whitsuntide suits which we got every year
at this time.
We sang hymns and were taken on the street to either the Church
of England. St Mary the Virgin, Woodkirk (AD.1074) or to Lee Gap
Fair ( oldest horse fair in England by Charter from King Stephen
1139). Perhaps both as they were interconnected and very close
together, only you couldn't reach the church by horse and cart,
but by horse only after going down Church Lane where I was born
( old house is torn down and new expensive constructed houses
replaces it .)
I am a Lee Fairite and we have our own anthem ( My Father's
house above...).
The Firsta fair in in late August , the Latter Fair in
September, held twice a year. Garthwaites shop could be seen
there at the end of Church lane on Baghill, or was there. An old
stables could be seen there in the aisle of the shop.

That's a nice memory, Leslie. We didn't have that sort of thing
down here. However today, 19th, is the feast of Pentecost which
is the end of the season of Easter. May the Holy Spirit be upon
us today. Presumably it is on a different date in the Orthodox
tradition.

Lovely memories of your life and times.
Whit Sunday walks in Manchester. My two elder Sisters and I, had
rag ringlets new dresses, white ankle socks and white net
sandals. We walked with banners and held the many ribbons
attached to the banners as we walke d in the Easter parade.
There were songs and prayers at the end. With a buffet for all.
I did wonder why at Easter time the essential part was not
Christ having risen from the dead.
But it did ground us in celebrating together who Christ is in
our lives. We all share in one belief if we believe in Christ
Potted beef and salmon butties were delicious..yummiest

Welcome, Just Me. It's good to have a new poster, there are not
many of us left and we're a disparate group but quite friendly.

I believe.Newbie, Pentecost or Whitsuntide was chosen for the
parade because it is the time of the founding of the Church, it
is the time of the descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles.
50 days after Easter Sunday.
