Israel

All the Jews wanted was a piece of land to call their very own.
and the United Nations granted them their wish in 1948. They got
a scrappy piece of land and turned part of it into an
agricultural paradise and the rest of it into a technological
wonderland, the envy of the world. The Muslim Arabs didn't like
this and invaded in 1948 and were defeated. Lebanon, Syria,
Jordan and the might of Egypt and were soundly beaten. But, they
keep trying even up to the present day and our "stupid"
university students are yelling on the street. "From the river
to the sea." As if they know which river they are talking about.
They are led by foreign activators in Canada who are paid by
foreigners. No nation has suffered as much as the Jews
throughout history.

It was the future Israelis who invaded in 1948, forcing tens of
thousands of Arabs out of their homes and territory to live as
refugees in neighbouring countries.

Exactly, even I know that.
I am happy for Jewish people to have Israel but equally happy
for the Palestinians to have their little bit of land. Why they
cannot peacefully co-exist I do not know and could knock many
heads together. There are citizens on both sides who want peace
and harmony. I'm not sure that leaders of other countries
getting involved helps very much, frankly.

It's obviously much more complex than that and I'd recommend
reading an excellent objective 2017 history of the conflict
since its early days by Labour peer, Leslie Turnberg, 'Beyond
the Balfour Declaration'. On the Arab refugees. they were
treated as second or third class members of the host states and
millions still languish in camps inside them, deprived of most
human rights. The Jewish refugees created by the 1948 War were
immediately made citizens of the new State of Israel when the
conflict ended.

Thanks for that, it's very interesting.
I wonder where Greg is. I tried messaging him earlier, twice
actually, but neither seem to have gone through, there's nothing
in my 'sent' box.
Edit: My messages were very simple, I was not pouncing on him.
We are all entitled to have a break or go away for a couple of
days, sometimes we have internet problems. I just hope Greg is
OK, no doubt he will be here again before long.
Leslie will find the article interesting too.
Leslie, further to your previous post regarding 'river to the
sea' (Jordan to Mediterranean): “May he have dominion from sea
to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!” (Psalm
72:8).
"An old Zionist slogan, envisaged statehood extending over the
two banks of the Jordan river, and when that vision proved
impractical, it was substituted by the idea of a Greater Israel,
an entity conceived as extending from the Jordan to the sea. The
Palestinian phrase has also been used by Israeli politicians".

I don't like it when author versus author in such a manner. it
requires much more study to decipher between them.
Re the Palestinian shout at protests, they mean From the
(Jordan) river to the sea (Mediteranean) in a derogatory manner
towards Israel, implying the Jews should not be there at all and
neither should Israel.

That was quite a normal critical appraisal of a book, Leslie.
Books are usually reviewed by writers and it wasn't al negative.
You can read it and make up your own mind. I won't read it,
will look for more reviews and a synopsis which will suffice for
me.*
The Palestinians are not saying Israel should not be there, just
that there is no reason they should not be there too, they are
not asking for the world.
I've always supported the State of Israel but there's no doubt
they have become too big for their boots over the years. They
have tremendous international support but people are becoming
weary of it all.
* There are other reviews online.

Naturally, I disagree with your opinion about Israel, as I have
done so many times here. They have the right to exist and to
have a country of their own. They are surrounded by Arab nations
who have enough space to take on the population of Europe. Why
cannot they have the country given to them by the United Nations
in 1948?
They are a democratic country, unlike the nations surrounding
them and they are not obsessed with taking over other nations as
are the ones surrounding them. Nor, do they subscribe to a
warlike religion as they do. The only way the Muslims convert is
by military conquest and occupation.
All Hamas has to do is free the hostages and peace will reign.

I did actually say I have always supported the state of Israel,
Leslie. That doesn't mean I am not concerned about what happens
there.
